Grey's' Boss Dissects the Finale Shockers and Secrets
Grey's Anatomy by Randy Holmes/ABC
Viewers weren't the only ones surprised by the Grey's Anatomy finale shocker on Thursday. No, Shonda Rhimes wrote Friday in her blog that she kept the Mer-in-a-pool-of-blood secret from the show's other writers, up until the very last moment she could.
The reason behind Rhimes' long wait is that, she explained, she starts with the last scene of her finales before stepping back to plan out what comes before it. Yes, that means that she's pitching the end of Season 5 Friday (!), and that Thursday's big finale underpinnings were actually hatched four years ago. For Rhimes, though, the big moment was not in the kiss, but in the moments after.
"For this season," she explains, "I knew immediately that I wanted more hope. I knew I personally NEEDED more hope. So I pitched Meredith standing on Derek’s land in a field of candles telling Derek where the living room could be, where the kitchen could be, where the kids could play. Because I wanted them together."
The trick for Rhimes, though, was getting Mer there, and the key, she realized, was in what Ellis Grey told her as she lay dying: Be extraordinary. Not in surgery — but in love. "[That] made it possible for Mer to stand in a field of candles because once she realizes that, her whole world opens up," Rhimes writes. "She can just stand there in her joy."
And as for Callie, Erica and Mark? Rhimes promises that, while Sloan won't become anyone's hero, per se, there's some more evolution in store for a complicated story. "You'll be very surprised when you find out where this story is heading next season," she said. "Because we don't do things the easy way. And none of this will be easy."
Of course, don't expect anything too warm and fuzzy. That, Rhimes reminds us, is what makes it Grey's Anatomy. What could she be thinking up for this time, next year? Sadly, we're all going to have to wait. — Anna Dimond

I thought I was watching "Grey's Anatomy" not "ER". Callie and Erica feels like Dr. Weaver and her EMT love, see, I don't even remember her name. Shows you I quit watching. Why do series writers, producers or whatever feel they need to make existing characters gay? You made a big fuss over Isaiah Washington's remarks about T.R. Knight's sexuality and kicked him off the show. I have downloaded all episodes of Grey's Anatomy from iTunes, but if you make Callie and Hahn a couple, I'll delete them and stop watching the show. Please give George a backbone next year. I get tired of his whining ways. I have more to say, but I'll wait and see what happens.

I LOVE GREY'S!! The season finale was great! I liked the interaction between Izzie and Alex... I wish those two would get together. :D
Bailey was wonderful, as usual. I loved the way she was with the kid stuck in the cement. Bailey is such the mother figure.
I feel bad for Lexie. She obviously has feelings for George, and, as usual, George doesn't seem to realize it.
The end with Merideth and Derrek in the candle house was touching, but I didn't like how the last thing yu see is him walking away and her standing alone. Also, maybe it is just my doom and gloom paranoia, but Derekk told her to wait for him and I cannot help but thinking that something terrible is going to happen to keep him from her.

I LOVED this episode...but at the end i didnt know whether to be ecstatic or depressed, i wasnt sure if derek walking away was a cliffhanger for him about to die or something! and also when miranda was leaving with her son, the music stopped..i figured she was going to get hit by a bus or something...i really wasnt expecting a happy ending from greys, so was probably just looking for something to go wrong for them...im glad tho that it didnt! its about time they're not all depressed on this show :D

I love Grey's Anatomy and I really liked the season finale. Im glad they finally had a successful breakthrough with the clinical trial. Im not a huge fan of Ava though and I just wanted to kick her in the head to be honest with you. I loved the prospect of a 3 some . The Kiss was awesome too. Even my wife was surprised!

Which is an excellent waste of money that only affects yourself.

I thought the finale was terrific, but I would have enjoyed it a lot more if Rhimes hadn't insisted on broadcasting to all the world that Mer-Der were getting together at the end of it. Their kiss at the end would have been far more significant if I didn't know it was coming. Rhimes is usually so much better about keeping her plot quiet; why was this put out there?

Great job!! Wonderful delivery from all of the cast.
Nevertheless, Derek's parting words to Meredith in the last scene: "Wait for me. Don't move." resound in my mind & I can't help but wonder what's going to happen next season...
Please, please, let it not be a cliché such as Der having some kind of accident & not being able to get back to Mer...
My heart couldn't take it!! ">

If you listen to the podcast, Shonda flat out says that nothing will happen to Derek when he leaves & Rose will not be pregnant & Mer and Der will are together FOR GOOD & they will now deal with making their relationship actually work.

I'm totally in seventh heaven right now since MerDer are back together. Like Shaondra said she needed to have some hope in the show. I really needed some hope to so I just want to say thanks for an awesome show. I can't wait till next season. Just don't pull anything sneaking like making MerDer break up or anything. Keep up the good work.

Maybe there will be a triangle with Hahn, Callie, and Sloan. If so, I hope Mark wins Callie. While I am all for Grey's having a serious gay or lesbian couple on the show, I'm a little disappointed to have it be Callie. Why? Because she's been a character who always seemed very in touch with who she is and what she wants. It showed up back when she explained to McVet how they were all like high school kids, and when she kept the truth about her family money from George, and when she told Mark about how some women really want a good guy who cares about family and having kids some day. I have a hard time believing that Callie, at her age, hasn't had feelings for a woman beforehand if she is a lesbian or bi. Other characters maybe, but it doesn't ring as true for her. The other reason is that I liked seeing Callie with George and then Mark is because it's nice to see a genuinely full figured woman on tv being sexy and having relationships with lead men (as opposed to being just the best friend.) And finally, I think having Callie be involved with a woman sends a subtle message that what happened with George didn't really count. It glosses over the fact that the two of them were married, and it makes George cheating seem not as bad (well, he cheated on her, but that's okay, because she was secretly a lesbian!) Anyhow, that's just my take. Shonda does a great job with the show, so I'm willing to see where she takes this no matter what.

I for one LOVED the finale!!! Loved Mer/Der and the candles was just WOW! It made me squeal with delight!!! What a nice ending for this "tortured" couple!
Everyone's acting was SUPERB and they all got their time to shine. How awesome is Chandra Wilson? Beyond awesome! Karev & Izzie were spectacular as well but Izzie needs to stop asking others what to do. I'm very glad she stood up to Alex too. He, in NO way, could help Rebecca with her issues.
Xtina got her groove back!! And it's about damn time. Way to tell Dr. Hahn off...now teach Lexie, the photographic memory kleptomaniac! LOL!!
And now to try & answer the question some of you have...it's VERY possible that someone you work with is very much gay despite the fact that they've slept w/ members of the opposite sex in the past. So why not Callie?? I LOVE the fact that Erica/Callie COULD be a couple next season!! LOVE IT!! Love is a beautiful thing, no matter the "packaging". Besides, not everyone knows they're gay right away. It takes time and certain circumstances to make you realize that you do have feelings for another man/woman! Bravo Shonda!!! Can't wait to see what happens next season!!!
