While The Great Debaters dominated the film categories at Thursday's NAACP Image Awards — it turned eight nods into a quartet of wins (including best motion picture and acting kudos for Denzel Washington and Jurnee Smollett) — Tyler Perry's House of Payne and Grey's Anatomy emerged as the most-lauded TV series.

Grey's walked away with drama series and writing team honors, while Chandra Wilson scored best supporting actress. TBS' House of Payne, meanwhile, was named best comedy series, while LaVan Davis and Lance Gross won for lead and supporting actor in a comedy, respectively.

In the other TV races, Ugly Betty's America Ferrera and Vanessa Williams won for lead and supporting comedy actress; CSI: NY's Hill Harper and The Unit's Regina Taylor copped the top prizes on the drama side; and House's Omar Epps took home the supporting actor/drama trophy.

It was an entertaining award show but badly produced. The end of Steve Wonder's song and the closing remarks were performed at the same time in the interest of time and many presenters did not know when to read the nominees names.
I agree with many of the chosen winners except for Tyler Perry's House of Pain, ugh, I tried watching that show but could not and will not.

That's okay, noone was watching the Image Awards either! The NAACP Image Awards drew a 2.5/4 for FOX. I hope this is a sign to come and that people stop watching these pathetic award shows!! Try giving awards to people who actually do something of substance!!

Nice to know reverse discrimination is alive and well in this country. No wonder almost no one watched.

Awards shows are usually poorly produced. That said, it is good to know that racism is alive and well and still in America!

I love love love Tyler Perry, but House of Pain describes what I feel watching it. I wish it was Madea weekly, then I'd be all over it.

I don't think award shows like this to be examples of "reverse discrimination".

It's a niche market awards show, African Americans (and Latinos, I guess, since America won an award) are a niche group. I don't see it as being any different than the GLAAD awards or stunt performer awards or any other awards show that focuses on groups that often get overlooked in the mainstream.

When will we realize that the reason why minority groups no matter their race or gender have awards shows are based on the fact that the mainstream has overlooked them for decades... we have come along way with Hillary and Obama becoming the first woman or African American to lead a major ticket for president and even over the past few years with the Oscars being won by Denzel, Jamie Fox, Halle Berry, Morgan Freeman and Forrest Whitaker winning but there is still along way to go. People who make those reverse discrimination comments need to check out the statistics with any government agency when it comes to jobs and pay for minorities, health care for minorities as well as education... Once you see the stats comparing those who are a minority group as oppose to those who are in the majority (I am talking about those who have the power not a numerical majority...) then maybe you will understand why they have these award shows... Seeing people who look like you succeed and prosper really helps the psyche of any group and it lets you and the future generation know that they can do it too.

Can someone please explain how America Ferrera won an award -- or how she even got nominated? I thought she was Hispanic, not black....

The NAACP awards recognize all people of color, not just African Americans. Hispanics, Asians and others have been nominated in the past.

You people are joking right? You'd be up in arms crying racism if we were talking about a no blacks allowed award show, or a no latino one, etc. Exclusion of any group, in this case white people, because of race is racism no matter how you want to spin it. Just because someone is a minority doesn't mean they can't be a racist. And conversely someone doesn't have to be a minority to be a victim of racism.

The show also honors anyone who has had a positive impact on people of color. Bill Clinton has received an award as well as Bono for his AIDS work in Africa. It's not about racism. It's about honoring people who help to create a diverse palate in all aspects of media. One only need to look at the current Oscar nominees to recognize that we still need some work in this area.

Let me preface this by saying that I am white, but how the hell does House of Payne beat out Everybody Loves Chris, especially when these are called the IMAGE awards? What does House of Payne do the is remotely positive imagewise? And if image isn't really part of the criteria, Chris is still 10x better and funnier.

Wildbill, it is sad to see that you have such a poor grasp on this country's social history and are so unsatisfied with (and I am assuming here so correct me if I am wrong) being a member of the majority that has always had a slice of the pie while others had to make do with scraps.

Olamay, thankyoulord 13, Mattw and moviechicka, thank you for having the grace and intelligence to set the record straight. There is no "no whites allowed" policiy with the NAACP or its awards. There is only the recognition of those who have been and are left out of things otherwise.

And Buffy Freak, I think you have just as much right to your say so as anyone. Your color is irrelevant. And you are also one hundred per cent correct. Tyler Perry is an embarrassment to all Americans who'd like to see people of color portrayed with intelligence, real humor and dignity. Chris manages to be funny and even silly at times but is still infused with real humanity, portraying characters that any of us would be happy to know in real life.

Wildbill, NAACP stands for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and was started by a coalition of black and white people as an integrated organization dedicated to helping those on the bottom of the social and economic ladder to rise up and not to bringing down those higher up. The organization is most definitely not a black equivalent of discriminatory or racist organizations like the KKK and others.

As moviechicka explains, the Awards have recognized and honored all kinds of people. People of all colors. Last time I checked, white was a color too.
