Green Hornet Has the Big-screen Buzzzzz
Columbia Pictures, which has Spider-Man 3 swinging into theaters on May 4, has its eye on a new "bug": the Green Hornet, which was created by the Lone Ranger's Fran Striker and George Trendle and finds millionaire Brit Reid moonlighting as a masked crime fighter.
The Green Hornet originated as a '30s radio serial and was once a TV series starring Van Williams and Bruce Lee (as sidekick Kato). The property, says Variety, had previously been eyed by Universal and Miramax, with Kevin Smith developing it for 'Max a few years ago, but Sony-based Neal H. Moritz (an executive producer on Prison Break) has emerged as the guy to actually shepherd the feature franchise. Kato and the Green Hornet, Moritz tells Variety, "are my favorite crime-fighting duo." (No offense, Linc and Michael.)

OK, I know there aren't a lot of people under the age of, well, old who really care about the Green Hornet, but I'm going to post here anyway for those who do.
This, along with the news last week of the Captain Marvel movie, has me excited.
I like to see these off-the-beaten-track classic characters getting a shot, especially since the Wonder Woman movie seems (so far) to be as invisible as her jet, and The Flash is going nowhere fast.
My only real exposure to Green Hornet was when the characters from the '60s series crossed over for a two-part episode of Batman. It made for an interesting story, and not just onscreen -- offscreen, Bruce Lee (Kato) delighted in acting really PO'd at Burt Ward (Robin) for no apparent reason.
Anyway, I think this could be a good movie.

I seemed to remember that they were going to make a Green Hornet movie a few years back with George Clooney in the lead. Maybe that was just my imagination or just a rumor.

Here's an interesting bit of trivia about the fictional characters of The Green Hornet and The Lone Ranger! The Lone Ranger's secret identity was John Reid. Some episodes of The Lone Ranger featured his nephew Dan Reid, who is the father of Britt Reid, The Green Hornet. That makes The Lone Ranger the great-uncle of The Green Hornet!
I love stuff like that! (Didja know in the Hi and Lois comic strip, Lois' brother is Beetle Bailey???)
(ahem) Sorry. My geekiness is showing. (blush)

No, I think you're right, lizzybelle. I think the Clooney version pre-dated the Kevin Smith-scripted version, although they may have been one and the same.

Gord, I had heard the Lone Ranger/Green Hornet connection over the years, but not the Hi and Lois/Beetle Bailey connection (or, if I had, I had forgotten it).
That kind of stuff fascinates me, too. Back in the '70s, there was a series of thick paperback trivia books that came out that had useless minutiae about everything -- old radio shows, comic books, celebrity marriages, detective novels, and so on. I loved those books!
Don't apologize -- I suspect I could give you a pretty good run for your money in a geek-off!

Thank you Chappy, I knew I didnt imagine something like that.
And thank you Gord....I like that type of trivia. I never would heard that Lone Ranger and The Green Hornet were releated. Actually that was way before my time. And I would never of known that.
