OMG, Says Parents Council to Gossip Girl's OMFG

It was only a matter of time. Media watchdog group Parents Television Council is hot on the Louboutin heels of the CW's "OMFG" marketing campaign for Gossip Girl, saying it's just too sultry. The print and online campaign has been heating up for the past few weeks (you can take a peek here!).

The Council takes issue in particular, with what they say is a "sexually suggestive photo showing a teenage boy kissing a girl's cleavage." In a statement, PTC said it "deplores the CW's deliberate use of profanity and sexual imagery to exploit and further corrupt young viewers." Further, the Council adds, GG "glamorizes casual sex and drug use among teens. Storylines have featured a would-be teen rapist, threesome among teens, and teenage girls having sex with adults."

Gossip Girl
and the CW are only the latest target, however, of PTC wrath. In the past, the Council has also taken issue with shows including Dexter, America's Next Top Model and Las Vegas, among other targets, such as the networks MTV and BET, for well, just doing what they do ("sex, violence, drugs and explicit language," according to the PTC).

While CW has not yet responded, you can. Is the racy new Gossip campaign just too racy for teens' own good? Or simply a more glamorous presentation of what's already out there (especially since the audience extends way beyond teens)? — Anna Dimond

A teenage boy kissing a girl's cleavage? OMFG! How unnatural! When will those pathetic and annoying losers from PTC finally put a sock in it and get a life?

Hey Parents Council, isn't it the parents job to look out for their children? Leave my show alone!

Are they a bit racy? Yes! Is it any worse than those pictures your teenagers upload to their MySpace profiles? Prob. not! Sadly, High School today is more like GOSSIP GIRL than it is HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL.

What teenage girls with adults? NONE of the girls on the show has done anything like that with an adult.

May I just say that I just tried to post the word s-x and the TVGuide filter said that it was inappropriate.

What's next? Pregnant?

It's too bad no one cares, because controversy like this used to get more people to tune in! Fortunately, the world has grown up and we don't need someone telling us what to watch.

I think that the adds go too far and are unnecessary. You want it to be in the show, fine keep it in the show. If the show is so great you don't need this type of shock value advertising to get people to watch.

The PTC are far-right lunatics. The media should just ignore their press releases the same way that they would avoid flat-earthers other tinfoil hat-wearing morons.

These dorks give religion and family values a bad name and thus do the exact opposite of what they intend. In that way, they're inherently blaspheming their own beliefs.

As many have said in their comments, the PTC should just shrivel up and go away. I'm sick and tired of do-gooders trying to change things they don't like. They do not have to watch, or read, what they consider objectionable.

So, PTC.... GO AWAY!!!

I think the ads go too far. I can certainly choose what I want to watch or what I allow my children to watch, but it is hard to avoid ads, especially when they are on a website that I approve of in general. The OMFG offended me a little bit.. mainly the "F". OMG would have been sufficient.
Again, I'm not for censorship, and I choose when to turn the television off, but I think the ads themselves are a little too provocative.

I can't say I think they should use OMFG in the ad, but I agree, it should be up to the parents to teach their kids. Unfortunately, there are way too many parents out there that don't teach their kids. With the stats of kids having sex and getting STD's, it only goes to prove my point.

I totaly agree with the PTC. There has got to be some kind of sanity here. It is completely inappropriate to air adds like the one in question anytime, anywhere. Yes parent's need to be responsible for thier own children, organizations like the PTC help these efforts. All you who complain that you don't want to be told what you can watch on T.V. need to realize that there are other people WITH CHILDREN who feel the same way about it. We would like to have the option to NOT have something shoved in our faces. There is a program listing for shows, but not for adds.
