Golden Flubs: Exec Stands by Menounos' Work

Did you know that America Ferrera wasn't the first choice to play Ugly Betty? Neither did she, apparently. Ferrera has Maria Menounos to thank for bringing the slight to her attention, mere seconds after she grabbed her Golden Globe. While backstage witnesses tell the New York Post's Page Six that show producers grew "antsy" watching Menounos orchestrate such awkward moments, a rep for the Greek goddess says the talk "is not true." Adds Globes exec producer Barry Adelman, "We were very pleased to have Maria as a correspondent. She did a great job."

That was an extremely awkward moment. I wanted to pretend I was Maria and crawl into a hole and assume the fetal position.

Maria is a twit and frankly, I don't think she knew what she was talking about when she claimed America wasn't the first choice for the role. Maybe she was, maybe she wasn't. But how would Maria know and America not? And honestly, who cares! Just get Maria off of my TV set. Please!

Yeah, I was cringing, too. It seems to me that a more seasoned reporter would have dropped the scripted crapola she was spouting the minute that America came and stood by her, and had instead immediately started interviewing her. And then a traditional, "How does it feel?" would have been preferable than trying to show off by having JN (juicy news) that most folk don't know. America is the star here, not Menounos.

I thought MM was terrible the whole night, but that gaffe was the WORST. She basically rained on America Ferrera's parade with her incompetence and selfishness. Everyone I have talked to who saw the broadcast pointed that out as just embarrassing.

The only thing I can think of is that maybe Maria Menounos wasn't trying to say that people didn't want America to play Betty, but that people didn't want to see an unconventional character like Betty on tv. Either way, the way she worded the question made her sound like an idiot.

Some procedural Golden Globes questions:

If they're so worried about going over the time limit, what was with all the (awkward) exit interviews between Maria and the winners in the first place? Just go to commercial!

When a TV show wins, the entire cast and crew goes up to accept, but when a movie wins, it's just the producers. What gives?

Why were there 7 lead actors nominated for a TV movie, instead of the usual 5?

How many times did the announcer proclaim that the Globes were "the hottest ticket," "Hollywood's hippest party," "the place to be" or such? Everyone knows that when you continually pat yourself on the back, it only reveals your own lack of confidence.

Why did all 10 movies get special introductions with individual clips and such, while the 10 TV shows only got their names read?

Why allow Adrien Grenier to read the category of fellow castmate Jeremy Piven (in the supporting actor mess of a category)? Isn't that a conflict of interest?

Can no one at the ceremony hold their bladder? Everyone's constantly getting up and moving around -- it really doesn't look good on television.

I couldn't agree more the interviews were a waste of time. I'd rather hear more acceptance speech and less cheeze on the side lines. It sort of takes away from the glamour of the whole thing when you have some two-bit hack on the sidelines asking you inane questions.

MM made me cringe. I can't honestly think what her point was. She basically rained on America's parade. "You won, did you know they didn't want you?" I was like, "WHAT?! WHO DOES/SAYS THAT?!" Tasteless, whomever wrote that question should be fired.

MM made me so angry when she did that to America. First, I agree with someone here who said MM should've just dropped her scripted crap and interviewed America when that sweet girl came to stand by her. MM completely IGNORED HER! That was so RUDE! She just kept flapping her trap while America stood there with her Globe. And then she opened with that horrendous question.

Please, no more MM at next year's Globes or anywhere else, for that matter. Plus, she's a horrible actress(Fantastic Four movie).

MM has always grated my nerves. I always say show business and politics are the only two industries where someone can totally suck and still get jobs.

I thought the post said Maria was the first choice. But I mis-read it. I was about to go off!

Ok, I give up. Who is Maria Menounos? I only watched the last hour of the GG show up to 11:00; so, thankfully, I missed Miss What's-Her-Name. It hardly matters now whether or not the producers of Ugly Betty originally wanted America Ferrera. America loves America as Betty and how many people know who What's-Her-Name is??<img border=">

MM sounded like she was lying to cover her ass because she sounded like an idiot (or is that how she always sounds). Please next time get someone with a brain to do correspondence. That was a completely uncomfortable scene and she totally ruined the post-win high we were all on after America's victory.

And do we really need someone to tell us what's coming up, who's presenting next, etc? No. Maria should have ignored the stupid script and just went with her interviewer's intuition.

I happened to catch America Ferrera's post-win interview with Access Hollywood, I think it was, the other night. They made reference to the fact that the producers at first thought she was too pretty to play "ugly." So maybe that's what Maria meant? In any event, it was a moronic thing to say (and a badly-worded way to say it) just as America was walking off stage.

Maria was worthless on the show. Like others have said, it was very awkward for America to stand next to Maria, who ignored her, while Maria finished her script.

I do agree with something else I read where Maria feels she's the star. She needs to take lessons from Mary Hart.

I also didn't like Maria's hair.
