The Golden Compass topped the weekend box office with $26.1 million — a take described as "modest" when compared to the initial hauls of peers such as Lord of the Rings ($47.2 million) and Chronicles of Narnia ($65.6 mil). Enchanted placed second with $10.7 million.

Rounding out the top five were This Christmas ($5 mil), Fred Claus ($4.7 mil) and Beowulf ($4.4 mil).

In limited release, the largely hailed Juno averaged a huge $60,016 per screen, while Atonement averaged $25,528.

That figures. After EW game the movie a C in its review, it was obvious to me that this movie's hopes for blockbuster status are slim.

In fact, I predict that next weekend, Golden Compass will be knocked of the top by either Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, or, more likely, I am Legend.

Controversy may create cash, but only for the short term.

Parents would do well to not dismiss "all the hype" that surrounds this occultic movie. Even looking on their webiste (goldencompassmovie dot com), a section is devoted to helping a child summon his own person daemon (pronouced "dee-mon") - his soul self now separated from his body and living in animal-spirit form. The director, producer, and writer of this film intentionally "toned down" the anti-religious theme of this movie to get children sucked in and get them to read the books, which, by book three, succeed in killing God. It will become apparent by the seoond and third movies, if they garner enough audience support to warrant producing the others. Pullman is avid God-hater who despises C.S. Lewis and in his own admission wrote these books to parallel the Chronicles of Narnia and create a generation of young people who will hate God and anything spiritual.
