Girlfriends Goes Bye-Bye
Girlfriends by Darien Davis/Paramount Pictures/The CW
When Aaron proposed to Joan in Girlfriends' seventh-season finale, fans suspected that that episode was the series' swan song. But it wasn't. The show returned for an eighth and final season. But instead of going out with a bang, Girlfriends went out with a whimper — another victim of the writers' strike. Today, CW executives announced there will be no new post-strike Girlfriends episodes because the network has decided to "focus its creative and financial resources on shows that are in consideration for renewal next year." So Monday's episode, where Joan (Tracee Ellis Ross) read her fiancé Aaron's letter to his former students and learned that he would be returning from Iraq in two weeks, will be the series' last. New episodes of its spin-off, The Game, are expected to premiere in March. "Although it's always difficult to say goodbye, I choose to focus my energy on the history that Girlfriends has made," Mara Brock Akil wrote in her official farewell statement. "I am immensely thankful to the amazingly talented cast, writers, directors, staff and crew for their endless dedication and hard work for eight seasons." Girlfriends ran for 172 episodes. Akil is currently in talks with CW and CBS Paramount Studios to produce a farewell special for the series, which has consistently ranked among the top shows with African-American viewers. — Rochell D. I stopped watching after Toni left, so I'm a bit lost on the show's stories. The show definitely needed to end, but it should have at least got a full season to wrap everything nicely.

I am deeply saddened by this news. Even though Girlfriends fell off a bit this past season, after a record-setting 8 seasons on TV, it deserves a proper send-off. They could have at least filmed a series finale featuring Joan and Aaron's wedding, and the birth of William and Monica's baby.

This is SO wrong.
I should have known when they burned off two new episodes on Monday that it was coming.
I hope all of the actors find new roles soon. Tracee Ellis Ross is vastly underappreciated.
It just makes me mad, but this show has gotten the shaft so many times, and the CW has treated it horrifically. The CW sure didn't mind using the show when it had a gap to fill due to its lack of "creative resources". The strike just gives them an excuse to hide behind.

Guillermolbarra, we are >>>><<<<. What is the harm in producing one more episode to tie up all the loose ends. I'm sure the cast and crew are willing to do it. The CW is tossing the show aside with no thought or consideration for the millions of fans who do tune in every Monday, and have done so for years, since Girlfriends was on UPN. Tracee Ellis Ross is fabulous in so many ways, and I also hope that we will see all the actors again in the future. Maybe it's time for cousin Joan to step in and help Med School on The Game.

I never watched, but I did read some good reviews about it. Gotta give props, because that is an impressive run on any network.

Rochell twice you called Joan's fiance Brock but his name was Aaron. I hate that Monday's show was the last one. I agree that they need to give it a proper finale. They should show Joan FINALLY getting married with Toni coming back for Joan's wedding and William and Monica's baby. That is how Girlfriends should end.

CSIgirl, I didn't even realize that she referred to Joan's boyfriend as Brock. There is really no comparison between the fineness of Richard T. Jones (Aaron) and the ashyness of Mailk Yoba (Brock).

Girlfriends was the only show I watched on the CW after they cancelled Veronica Mars.
Now my boycott is complete. I'm annoyed. This network is all about crappy TV, reality TV and all-white TV.
So long, CW!

I just want to say how disappointed I am that the network has decided to send Girlfriends out in such a disgraceful way. This was not a show that was on for a couple of seasons, it deserves more after 8 seasons. I am going to have to think long and hard about being a continued supporter of a network that shows so little respect to it's fans and to a show that deserves more after 8 years.

I've only caught a few eps, but I have to agree - after 8 seasons it does deserve more than to just end it cold. Just my .02.

2006: Everwood(It was the WB, but still) 2007: Veronica Mars 2008: Girlfriends.
Three shows, three times they treated the vieweres like crap. There is a reason I don't watch the CW anymore.

I'm so sad to see Girlfriends go, but I am absolutely outraged @ the way it went. When it was time for the last episodes of Friends and Sex and the City, everyone knew it. It was advertised so much that people who didn't even have cable knew about it. Girlfriends was one of the best shows of all time and had an EXCELLENT cast. I think this definitely says something about the state of hollywood. It seems that no matter how good a Black actor is they always have to work twice as hard to get recognition and Girlfriends couldn't even get that. What a pitiful state hollywood, the execs of the CW (and whoever else is responsible for this) is in when they can't even take the time out to recognize true talent.
