Germany Foils Tom Cruise's Plot to Assassinate Hitler
Good luck following the logic of this one, folks: Germany has said nein to the producers of a film about a WWII scheme to kill Adolf Hitler, who wanted to shoot some scenes at military sites around the country — but it isn't because they fear it will compromise their national safety or anything. No, it's because Tom Cruise is the movie's star, and over there, Scientology is not recognized as a religion. Golly, this is even more embarrassing than that whole Anne Rice/Interview with the Vampire flap a hundred years ago.

I think Scientology is a load of crap but I don't understand why the Germans care what "religion" Tom Cruise practices. He's just making a movie there, he's not going on a crusade for Scientology or anything. Crazy.

The news item is way off and I find this problematic...
Cruise just wasn't allowed to film on actual locations. Not because he is disliked as a scientologist - which is rightfully critized on the other side of the Atlantic, making money is no religion - but because historic locations deserve to be respected sometimes...
Don't know when the last Jerry Bruckheimer blockbuster was shot at Arlington... *sarcasm*
I don't get this hoopla about Tom Cruise at all. It's Staufenberg's relatives - the unfortunate Hitler assassinator - which openly oposed to Cruise playing their grandfather/... because they don't find him suitable, also character-wise. And such a decision should be respected, don't you think?
Yet, no one is keeping Cruise from doing this movie to get filmed at Sudio Babelsberg (-> The Pianist, Aeon Flux, Speed Racer et all).
TV Guide Matt either needs to check his facts better or present them in some case less biased...

Matt here. (Ben Katner wrote the Today's News story in question.) From the Associated Press' Berlin office:
Germany has prohibited shooting of the Tom Cruise World War II thriller "Valkyrie" because of the actor's ties to Scientology. Germany has long contended the Church of Scientology is not a religion but an exploitative, profit-based business concern
Daily Variety is reporting this morning that the German Defense Ministry says the United Artists movie cannot be filmed at Germain military sites. Studio chief executive Paula Wagner says, "Mr. Cruise's personal beliefs have absolutely no bearing on the movie's plot, themes or content."

You know what's even more embarrassing? The fact that this isn't even true! All other articles are based on one single article on bbc.co.uk. The only big problem with the article? The German Defense Ministry hasn't even been asked yet! How can they say no to a filming permit then?

JaLinde - I am not doubting your statement, but exactly how do you know this? I have always found the Associated Press to be a pretty reliable source.

Well, if that's true, then I suggest you have a very big bone to pick with the BBC - because the story I'm looking at, contains attributed direct quotes. Hey, this isn't the New York Times or some 'fake but accurate' TV show, is it?
I also think if there was no truth to the story, then why aren't Paula Wagner and the German Defence Ministry saying so at the top of her lungs?
But all snark aside (and having little, if any, respect for Cruise or Scientology), am I the only person who finds the ironies in this story blatant and rather creepy.

I say good. The problem is not necessarily the "religion" scientology but the cult known as "The Church of Scientology." They have ruined many lives, been responsible for numerous deaths, use divisive and illegal practices and if you look at the facts of their beliefs and the origin of them (in my opinion) are just crazy.

How do I know they have not even been asked officially yet? Well, I can read...
Mr Kammerbauer, meanwhile, said that official requests for filming in the country had yet to be received.
