Geeks to Hollywood: We Want Wonder Woman! (We Want Her Bad)

In a recent poll of 1.6 million geeks… er, subscribers, TiVo asked which comic book character and/or classic cartoon they most wanted to see given the Transformers treatment. The results: In the comic book category — with Joss Whedon on board or not — the nerds want to see Wonder Woman take flight in her invisible jet like there's no tomorrow — she won 29 percent of the vote. Shockingly, the Green Lantern (I'm sorry, who?!) came in second with 26 percent.

In the cartoon TV show category, The Jetsons came out on top with a whopping 30 percent of respondents in favor of seeing Jessica Alba in Judy Jetson drag. (OK, I made up that last part, but you know they were all thinking it.) Family Guy came in second with 25 percent, and — sorry, Ausiello — The Smurfs trailed with 18 percent.

Geez, didn't you watch Superfriends? Or the Justice League animated series? Green Lantern's the one with the magic green ring from outer space. The Green Lantern comics are still popular and could provide material for a great movie.

Yeah. I've heard that Ben Afleck was in talks to make a disaster out of that movie.

A couple of years ago, there was a rumor going around that Jack Black wanted to do a Green Lantern movie (but as a comedy, like The Mask).

I suspected this rumor was bogus at the time and, thankfully -- so far, anyway -- that has proven to be the case.

I find it very difficult to believe that DC and Warner Bros. would ever allow a talentless slob like Black to ruin one of their longest running characters.

On the other hand, I am looking forward to further development on the Wonder Woman, Flash, Captain Marvel/Shazam, Green Arrow and Justice League movies which have been announced. And, of course, the next editions of Batman and Superman.

By the way, a few weeks ago, someone who claims to have seen the script for the Justice League movie says that it includes Batman and Superman. Most people assumed that it wouldn't, since they have their own movies.

The next question would be, Will Christian Bale and Brandon Routh reprise their roles?

There are current rumors of a "large" funnyman playing a green superhero in a spoof-Seth Rogan as the Green Hornet!
Anyone see the short-lived Flash TV series? I thought it was pretty good for its time-(and my age at the time!)
Green Lantern? How will they pull off a non-cheesy re-charging scene with a grown man hulking of a glowing green lantern chanting "In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight..." I'm thinking something similar to that "wacky" DD movie.
Justice League?-NO WAY one film is going to be able to get the rights to all of those characters, let alone pay for them! Just have to wait and see!

What? No She-Ra movie?

Yeah, I like Seth Rogen, but the Green Hornet thing has me concerned. Rogen is really more of a carpenter bee than a hornet. (That's a little joke for all you entomologists out there.)

I thought the Flash TV show was very well done. It's available on DVD now, by the by.

I think Green Lantern potentially could be made into a good movie (just not with Jack Black).

Marvel is facing the same issue with its Avengers movie. For years, these super-team movies were considered impossible because of those rights issues, but apparently the problems have been resolved. The success of the X-Men movies probably didn't hurt. By the way, DC also is developing a Teen Titans movie.

So, the single-hero movie is now passe -- the cinematic heroes of the future will travel in packs.

Robin or Nightwing? Speedy or Arsenal? Donna Troy or Wondergirl? What villian would you like to see? (has to have Terminator But how will they get a a PG-13 rating with the "teens" battling an assassin? Avenger's villain-Ultron!!...and here I go again Antman/Goliath/Giantman/or Yellow Jacket?)
Another problem I see with team movies is introducing all of the characters, how they meet, form the group, etc. That's at least 3-hour movie in itself, if its done right. Or is it a cheat to just jump to the action? It's going to be difficult to pull it of as well as X-Men (although they still could of done that better!)

I think they should skip all of that and just jump right into it.

Regarding the Teen Titans, I would like for it to be either the classic group from the '70s or the Wolfman/Perez group from the '80s (because that's what I'm familiar with and that was their heyday).

I suspect they'll go with the '80s group and Nightwing over Robin, with possibly a sly little in-joke about "his friend in Gotham City" or something like that.

I'm not that familiar with The Avengers, but I would definitely be interested in seeing the movie.

Regarding the Justice League movie, I found an interesting little item on Collider.com that said, in part:

"According to a very trusted source...George Miller (“Happy Feet,” “Mad Max,” “Babe”) is considering directing...'Justice League of America'...I’ve also heard from sources that the 'Justice League' film is more of a priority for WB than the sequel to 'Superman,' so don’t be surprised if you see Brandon Routh in 'Justice League' first."

Hmmmmmmmmm.

How could you not know who Green Lantern is? They're some of the great comic book icons. (yeah, sorry to further confuse, but there's a whole army of them)

A Green Lantern movie can be done well with enough work put into it. As long as they don't let anyone who was involved with Superman Returns anywhere near the movie. Superman Returns has to be one of the worst movies ever made, comic book or not.

Same has to be said for Wonder Woman. You have to find a balance between sticking to the character that we all know and moving that character into a more realistic world. Because as swell as comic book characters look on paper, they can look really silly on film (again, Superman). You don't want Wonder Woman to be a joke of a movie, as far too many comic books movies are.

Superman Returns was not that bad. Its two main problems were a badly miscast Lois Lane and a story that unsuccessfully straddled the fine line between homage and rehash.

I think the next one -- with a more original story and (hopefully) recast Lois Lane -- will be much better.

I agree with your rehash comment regarding Superman Returns! Enough with Lex Luthor!, Gee, there are only about a gazillion (recently added to the dictionary, for you "Grammeras" (wink!) out there!) other villains to choose from. I'm kind of Bummed that Batman is using the Joker AGAIN! Although the pixs of him I've seen, he does look pretty creepy!
Other rumors-The Black Panther with Wesley Snipes, and a Luke Cage flick-I think Henry Simmons would at least look like a great Powerman ...but rumors are just rumors!

It was late last night, and I was very sleepy while writing my above post -- in fact, I fell asleep during a brief pause! -- so I didn't elaborate on my thoughts about Superman Returns quite as much as I intended to.

Consider this an insert between the two paragraphs in my other post:

I did like the use of John Williams' original theme, the Jack Larson and Noel Neill cameos, the Marlon Brando footage, Brandon Routh's reiteration of Christopher Reeve's line about the statistical safety of air travel and the look on Lex Luthor's face when Kitty said that he was acting as if he had been in the Fortress of Solitude before (which, of course, he had).

Those were all perfectly legitimate tips of the hat to the first two movies, and made for some nice continuity.

I also thought the casting was spot on (with the exception of Lois Lane).

There were a lot of names mentioned for the role of Superman that, frankly, gave me the heebie jeebies -- names like Ashton Kutcher, Josh Hartnett and Brendan Fraser (I like him, but wrong for this part).

Matthew Bomer and Henry Cavill might have been acceptable, but I think Routh nailed it.

Frank Langella was great as Perry White, although I would have loved to see Hugh Laurie's version of the part. Sam Huntington was a good choice for Jimmy Olsen. James Marsden made a good romantic rival, and Eva Marie Saint was an excellent replacement for Phyllis Thaxter as Ma Kent.

On the other hand, I did not like the fact that the plot was virtually the same as the plot for the first Superman -- Lex Luthor trying to create real estate.

I also think that Lois having a child and Superman being the father was a mistake -- it just changes the dynamic too much, and not in a good way. (Although I think the kid playing Jason did a very good job.)

When all is said and done, I liked Superman Returns, and I do look forward to the next Superman movie -- although it sounds like we may have to wait a while for that if they use Routh's Superman in the Justice League movie.

*************************************************************************

Regarding The Black Panther with Wesley Snipes -- I swear to God, I've been hearing about that project for like 10 years! Is that thing still gestating?!?
