Garth Brooks, Celine Dion in CBS Prime-time Specials

Recording behemoths Garth Brooks and Celine Dion will perform in one-hour CBS specials airing Friday, Jan. 25, and Friday, Feb. 15, respectively.

The first of the specials (both of which air at 9 pm/ET), Garth Brooks: Live in LA!, will be telecast from his live show at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Variety reports. All proceeds from his concerts will be donated to the Southern California 2008 Fire Intervention Relief Effort, to which TV viewers will be able to call in donations.

Celine Dion: That's Just the Woman in Me was taped Jan. 12 in front of a live audience at Los Angeles' Wiltern Theatre, and included a mix of greatest hits as well as songs from Dion's most recent album, The Prayer. In her first concert since ending her five-year Vegas run, Dion will be joined by artists such as Josh Groban and Black Eyed Pea will.i.am, who, we know, will appreciate Celine's lovely lady lungs.

While concert specials have not been the highest ratings-reapers in recent months, these two shows reflect the increasing premium on original programming during the WGA strike. If the strike continues throughout the winter, is this the sound of what's to come? — Anna Dimond

Both sound good.. but how can they both be on a Friday, yet 10 days apart?

Garth Brooks promised that when he retired he'd go away for good. Seems you can't trust anybody anymore.

Maybe that's what they mean by "The Magic Of Television".

Well the 15 is a Friday but the 25th is a Monday. I miss the old variety specials but I guess they can't find talent like Carol Burnett, Lily Tomlin, Ann Margeret, Bob Hope etc anymore.

It's Garth on Jan. 25, Celine (ugh) on Feb. 15. I apologize for the confusion. - MWM

Silver Lining Comment

While neither of these singers interests me, perhaps the networks can convince other musicians to participate in specials. They would be a most welcome alternative to the glut of reality shows. Well, that is, unless you really do like Celebrity Apprentice;)

I agree! This is sooooo much better than all that reality tv crap! Let's get back to good sitcoms, series and entertainment!

I love Garth Brooks so I'm very happy about this. It's even nicer that all the proceeds are going to charity.

Celine's latest album is titled Taking Chances. She had a song on her 2002 album A New Day Has Come titled "Prayer".
