Friday Night Lights MVPs to See Less Playing Time

Friday Night Lights regulars Gaius Charles (aka Smash) and Scott Porter (Jason) will be spending some time on the bench, having been bumped to recurring status for Season 3.

As reported by EW's Ausiello, exec producer Jason Katims had to make this tough call in part due to budgetary reasons, but is committed to bringing both players' stories to a proper conclusion. FNL returns Oct. 1, on DirecTV's 101 channel. — Matt Mitovich

This is sad news.

However, as long as Smash and Street are being sidelined to make more room for Matt, Tim, the Taylors, and Landry/Tyra, then I can live with this. If, instead, Smash and Street are being benched to make room for more Buddy and Santiago nonsense or for brand new characters, well than that just sucks.

I nitpick because I love. I'm glad we're getting any FNL at all this season, so I'll quit griping now.

It's a little disappointing but at the same time, it's another reason to love FNL. It would be silly and unrealistic to keep the talented Smash in Dillon when he should be off to college. Likewise, Jason moved past football last season and it's not hard to see that he may decide to also move past Dillon. I'm also interested to see what happens with Lyla, who I would think should also be looking to get out of town.

In the same way, if Tim did indeed graduate, it's not unlikely that he would be bumming around town.

Is anyone else feeling a bit sad for Matt (and TV Guide in general) that most scoops have had the line "as reported by EW's Ausiello" in them

I'm not too torn up about Street fading from the show. I love the actor, but Jason's story was getting increasingly uninteresting. And I know why Smash is being phased out: he is the lone senior who is a major character. But they really need more in the way of major black characters. Plus phasing out Smash means phasing out his mother, and she was/is one of my favorite characters on the show.

Street is 2 years out of High School. Smash just graduated and is going to college. It makes perfect sense to drop them to guest star status. It wouldn't make sense to keep them around Dillon. The writers are actually using some common creating the story arc for next season.

I'm disappointed that TV Guide is now reporting what Ausiello is reporting for EW. I realize he was a former employee and has lots of scoop, but if you want to remain a credible publication, you guys need your own sources.

No Smash?????
Don't like it. His family should have been or should be developed more. That way there would not only be more major African American characters but also credible reasons to have Smash appear frequently. No reason we couldn't follow him to college either.

Please, everyone, MWM will develop his own sources in time. Let's be happy that Ausiello left so gracefully. Matt can gleefully reference him in these stories and this lack of bad blood means we get all of the scoop too.

I think the FNL scoop makes perfect sense and it being FNL they can make it happen seamlessly. I would be OK if a new, hot young player was added. It is great to see the progression of young football players who come onto the team and do well. Don't you all remember from high school how ''cool'' the really good sophomore players were. They could have some great stories with that.

While both of them will be missed as regulars, it makes sense. Street has been out of high school for two years and isn't part of team anymore. Smash is going to college. Tim, Lyra, and Tyra were seniors in the first season until they changed that and should be well out of high school by season three. Though Tim's the type of guy I don't see leaving Dillon.

I see this is coming back 10/1 on Direct TV's 101 channel. Does that mean it's not going to be shown on regular cable channels????

I'm sad, but it's a fact of life that people graduate and move on. I hope that Mama Smash is somehow kept in the mix, though. I'm just sorry that the season was cut short last year, so we didn't get to see the result of the championships, or see Smash actually graduate. I am thankful that we're getting another season, and hope that it manages to draw the viewers that DTV and NBC need.

That is a shame. Who does that leave? Tyra, Lylah, Tim Riggins, Saracin & the coaches daughter. We will miss Smash & Jason for sure.
