Film Registry Keeps Mel Brooks' Saddles Blazing

Blazing Saddles, Fargo, Groundhog Day, Halloween, Notorious, Rocky and sex, lies and videotape are among the 25 films selected this year for inclusion in the National Film Registry, Variety reports. This update to the catalog of "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant" films to be preserved in perpetuity also includes the silent fare Flesh and the Devil (the first on-screen pairing of John Gilbert and Greta Garbo) and Tess of the Storm Country (the 1914 feature that made Mary Pickford a star).

Before you start grumbling, Liar, Liar, made in 1997, was not yet eligible.

Look, I liked Groundhog Day, but come on. This is why these kinds of lists/honors ultimately become meaningless -- the inclusion of dubious elements.

I must differ. I'd posit that any film that coins a term, a part of the lexicon, has made a step toward being culturally significant.

How would we have summed up Day Break if that Bill Murray film never existed? How?

I agree with Matt. Groundhog Day wasn't an Oscar winner, but it had a significant impact on the pop culture of this country or at the very least our colloquialisms.

May I ask how NoTORIous has been
"culturally, historically or aesthetically significant"?

I'm not sure what you are talking about, but I think Notorious with Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman is one of the finest movies ever made.

Oh, God, I hope you're kidding.

Your comment slipped in ahead of mine, CinderAngelkc!

I was referring to the one above yours from Ranger99. His particular capitalization indicates he's referring to NoTORIous, the reality show with Tori Spelling.

As I said, I hope he was kidding.

As for Groundhog Day:

Yes, it has become oft-copied and oft-referenced -- no question it's a popular movie -- but still...is that enough to make it a Film Registry movie? I'm just not sure.

I mean, I'm not going to picket outside the Library of Congress over this -- I just don't want the National Film Registry to become a state-sponsored version of the People's Choice Awards.

I see. Having never seen this show, it didn't even occur to me.
