Where Is This Fall's Big Breakout Hit?

If the new TV season boasts a Prison Break-esque, insta-popular newcomer, that show has yet to announce itself. To date, no new series has finished higher than second in its time slot, leaving the title of "Next Big Thing" still up for grabs. While NBC's otherwise-excellent Kidnapped has the dubious distinction of being the lowest-rated premiere thus far, Jericho, Variety notes, is perhaps the strongest-performing newbie, giving CBS a 42 percent improvement in key demos in the Wednesdays-at-8 hour. Still as yet to hit the airwaves: NBC's Heroes (bowing tonight at 9 pm; see related feature) and Friday Night Lights, and ABC's The Nine, Ugly Betty and Help Me Help You.

Speaking of the 'Heroes" premiere... can anyone explain to me how these people are considered "heroes"?? From what I have seen of the previews, they are just people with freaky powers.. nothing I have seen shows any of them doing something that a hero would do, ie rescuing people. I have a big problem with the title of the show...

Kidnapped is definitely excellent! I hope it finds an audience soon

I'm guessing here that, over time, once they come to terms with their abilities, some or all of these individuals will use their powers for a greater good. (That cause is actually hinted at strongly at the final moments of tonight's pilot.) When in doubt, I always watch the actual show.

Sounds like a good guess Matt...
I will have to flip over and check it out when Runaway goes to commercial.

Sometimes it takes more than one showing for a breakout to occur. Or so it seems to me.

And I expect Studio 60's numbers to go up tonight. Too many people saw advanced copies of the pilot.

The new format of TVguide.com is frustrating and infuriating, I personally hate it.

To be a breakout, it DOES necessitate the show to break out the first week, not slowly build. I am concerned that NBC has almost nowhere to move Kidnapped. I am guessing I would prefer to see it time-share with ER instead of Black Donnellys. I also doubt Studio 60 will build tonight. It is an hour of constant jabbering and hallways. How do they make behind the scenes of a frenetic show seem so boring?
