Fall TV Press Tour: Desperate Housewives Scoop!

Desperate Housewives by Andrew Eccles/ABC
Some tidbits from Marc Cherry and, as he calls them, his "lovely ladies" from the cast of Desperate Housewives, on the new season. — Mickey O'Connor

• Eva Longoria Parker is excited to play something other than glamorous. "I spend 10 minutes in makeup now instead of an hour," she says.

• Teri Hatcher describes Old Susan as being like: "Please love me." New Susan, she says, is more closed off to love and no longer needy about it. Series creator Cherry says that Hatcher's instincts about Susan five years later are good. "Susan's first scene in the season premiere is based on something Teri pitched to the writers," he reports.

• Cherry reconfirmed that Neal McDonough would be moving to Wisteria Lane — with revenge on his mind. "And I'll say no more," he teased.

• "Edie is like a bad boomerang; she just keeps coming back," joked Cherry about Nicollette Sheridan's five-year absence from the neighborhood. "I was sad to see my son go because it's interesting to show some of Edie's humanity," says Sheridan. "There's a lot more to her than we've seen. She's a lot more conscientious about things [this season], without losing her comedic edge."

•Executive producer Bob Daily made it clear that the five-year jump was basically permanent: "We might have a few flashbacks here and there, but the show is definitively five years in the future now."

•Cherry repeated his desire for Desperate Housewives to be a seven-season show. "Or," he teased, "that could be a ruthless ploy on my part to get obscene amounts of money for Season 8."

•All you James Denton fans out there? Cherry only said that we'd find out why Mike Delfino is no longer Susan's main squeeze, stopping short of confirming Denton's return to the show.

•There will not be a musical episode of Desperate Housewives. Cherry says it has already been done by too many other series. "I'd rather do something more off the beaten path," he says.

If James Denton is NOT back as a full regular, I will be REALLY disappointed. I know that the show is CALLED Desperate Housewives .. but the men are important to the show too!!

And what about David Vickers? Will he and his significant other be back?

The men are important, too! I'm a bit disappointed about this turn of events. Hope the creative team has really thought this through and that it isn't just a gimmick.

When James Denton was on Regis and Kelly earlier this week, he said he has been back doing scenes for the new season, but so far he has only appeared in flashback sequences.

This 5 year jump is lame! What a way to negate the Mike/Susan story line we've invested in for last few years, along with all of the others. One less show I need to DVR next season.

My prediction: This 5 year jump for Desperate Housewives will be the ultimate jump-the-shark moment for the series. It is the equivalent to the Dallas dream season, which ruined that series. I remember at that time that everyone connected with Dallas (producers, actors, etc.) were all claiming that the dream would not only allow Bobby Ewing to return, but would be a creative "fresh start" for the series and allow the writers to hit the re-set button. Sound familiar? Desperate Housewives is doing the same exact thing. You can't just take a formula that works, that viewers have invested in, and scramble everything up by throwing the show 5 years into the future just to re-invigorate the writers. It then becomes a completely different show. Sorry, but this is a tired gimmick stolen from Lost and shows a complete lack of imagination and creativity on Marc Cherry and the writers parts. I'll tune in to see if James Denton is still on board. If he's gone, so am I.

A lot of people, including myself, basically said the same thing when Battlestar Galactica did it's time jump at then end of season 2. That worked out just fine, so I'd give any show that does that a chance before writing it off completely.

I'm excited for the 5 yr jump. I'll be sad if some of the character's are gone, but I think things will turn out alright...I wish it were fall already!!

I certainly don't recall anyone saying the Dallas dream season would be a creative fresh start. In fact, I recall Linda Grey saying that--while she was happy to have Patrick Duffy back--she was furious that her long storyline about her once-and-for-all detox and recovery from alcohol addiction was suddenly thrown out the window. In fact, they tried to re-do it in the following Pam's-awake season, but it wasn't as powerful.

There was also a lot made of the fact that making that season a dream would create havoc for Knots Landing (Gary and Val named one of their twins Bobby in his uncle's memory), so they decided that Bobby would stay dead on that show, and the two shows would never interact again.

Even Larry Hagman admitted it was an ill-conceived idea, but having Duffy back was worth it. There's nothing familiar between the mea culpas they did about that ridiculous twist on Dallas and what they are doing now on DH.

People always take the slightest little change about their TV shows say "jump the shark, jump the shark"! It's tiresome.

I'm pretty sure wizard62 is one of those posters who posts their comments but doesn't read anyone else's, so I'm probably wasting my breath, but I will just point out that a mere two posts from his/her post is the answer to the question about whether James Denton will be a part of DH this coming season. :)

Who cares about whether or not the Mike Delfino character will be back or not... Will Carl the Cad (played by hottie Richard Burgi) be back?

As far as I'm concerned, "Desperate Housewifes" jumped the shark when they took him off as a regular. I've never before seen such a good-looking actor have such great comedic timing. The only time I watch "Desperate Housewifes" now is when I know he's going to make a guest appearance. And one shot a year (that all he was on this past season) is not enough to save this show for me.

Well I cetainly care if Mike Delfino will be back or not. He's the main reason I watched the show, besides some of Lynette's storylines. I'm with kmbohio on this one, they've lost a loyal viewer for good. Looks like I'll just be tuning into Brothers and Sisters.

I wish they would not move Housewives into the future. I am glad that Mike dumped (I assume it was him) Susan's needy a**. She is so annoying!

I've been a fan since the beginning
I invested a lot of emotion into the Mike Susan story, now to have it just flushed down the drain this way, I'm not inclined to forgive and forget.
