Exclusive First Look: Wonder Woman DVD Movie

080707wonderwoman.jpg
Wonder Woman and all related characters and elements are trademarks of and (c) DC Comics.
The golden Lasso of Truth won't be needed to confirm the rumors: Keri Russell is indeed the star of the February 2009 animated DVD movie Wonder Woman, the next in a series from Warner Bros. and DC Comics following Tuesday's release of Batman: Gotham Knight. (Check out the full poster here.)

The Felicity star voices Princess Diana, the Amazon-turned-superhero. "This story is funny and action-packed and adult in a nice way," Russell says. "Then they said Nathan Fillion was playing opposite me, and that made it that much better."

Fillion, who costarred with Russell in the 2007 indie darling Waitress, plays Air Force pilot Steve Trevor, who crash lands on the Amazon's island. "Playing second fiddle to Keri is a wonderful fiddle to play," Fillion says. "I've done it before, I'll do it again—quite happily." The Desperate Housewives star adds, "What I like about Steve Trevor is that he's a very real guy. He's very honest and he's very natural. He doesn't apologize for much. And he's about as normal as a guy can be while hanging out with Wonder Woman."

The movie tells the Amazon princess' origin story. "She's a true, strong warrior, but she's also right at the break of being a young woman standing on her own and fighting out in the world," Russell says.

Also in the cast are Virginia Madsen as Wonder Woman's mother, Queen Hippolyta; Rosario Dawson as Diana's Amazon rival Artemis; and Alfred Molina as Ares, the film's villain. — Rich Sands

This is how the live-action movie should be cast.

I mean, every actor, not just Ausiello's some Smurf-loving guy's movie star crush.

Ditto that, Rod. My only concern with Keri is if hair and makeup artists could turn her into a convincing brunette.

You realize this is ANIMATED.... Hair/make-up dont really matter.....

Nor does it matter how 'hot' the actress who voices the character is, although Keri is a babe.....

Animated works are usually more concerned with the clarity and tonal quality of a star's voice then their looks.

PsiHawk, I think you misread what ShutUpRob and tijj were trying to say. What they were saying is if they make a Live Action movie, they should use the same voice actors of this DVD animated move to be in the Real One actually playing the characters they voice.

Then Tj was saying, if Keri Russel is cast in the REAL movie, he was worried the hair wouldn't be right. Get it?

Not sure about Keri (cos I've never seen her in anything) but Nathan Fillion would be a perfect Steve in a live-action movie.

While I'm excited about the cast (Nathan Fillion is dreamboatastic and pitch-perfect casting as Steve Trevor gets - animated and/or live, we could always hope), I'm concerned by that poster image. I hope it's a really rough take on what the animation will look like. After the amazing success of The New Frontier, I was hoping they'd be a little more true to George Perez, since this is based on his reboot. Superman: Doomsday fell way short of WB animation standards, IMHO and WW deserves better than that with her first animated solo outing.

And just to get back on point - let's get the petition to cast Fillion as the live action Trevor out there ASAP...

I have no problem with Keri Russell's hair wrt a live-action version. WW's hair (particularly during George Perez's run on the book) is/can be very, very curly. I think she'd look fine with jet-black hair 1) as long as it's not a wig, 2) as long as her hair remains long and curly and 3) as long as Scott Speedman goes nowhere *near* the movie. ;)

Nathan Fillion as Steve Trevor would be excellent for the obvious reason if anyone has seen Waitress.

If I were Russell, however, I would first try to take a couple of indie roles and/or major roles where I'd have to color my hair black, that way, I'd have on-the-job experimentation on how to work the color.

Although, technically speaking, I don't see why a Russell WW couldn't go with Keri's real hair color. I mean, we're taking Keri Russell, whose personality fits the character, as opposed to Cathy Lee Crosby, whose personality was as close to the character as [DC Comics Geek] Oa is to Earth. PS: Slight modification to my original statement on casting: in the live action movie, Lauren Graham should play either Hippolyta (with her own naturally Keri-Russell-curly jet black hair) or she should play Aphrodite. And Virgina Madsen should play Hera.

I just prefer my WW as a brunette. There are plenty of blondes in movies, I like props to go to brunettes when they can. I wasn't a big fan of Kirsten Dunst's change to redhead for the Spidey movies, but Charlize Theron looked good when she played Aeon Flux. Keri would probably look great, I just can't envision it for the moment. And Rod, leave my "boyfriend" Scott Speedman alone.;)

I don't know if I like the look of this WW/Diana. Since Bruce Timm is one of the producers, I don't understand why they didn't stick with the animation used in Justice League and Justice League Unlimited, also produced by Timm.

She just looks...off, somehow.

Russell is dishwater-blonde (really, brown-ish with around 3-4 colors within it), not blonde-blonde (straw-blonde) like Bell and Theron are. As a comics fan and WW comics fan, I think Russell would look terrific.

FTR, re: Scott Speedman -- you can have him (she was meant for Noel, darn it!); my celebrity crush is on Lauren Graham. :P

Also -- who's Rod?

PS to Sanjeeta: The direct-to-DVD DC movies are NOT a continuation of the Justice League Unlimited versions of the characters. They're adaptations of key DC Comics storylines; while they don't hew closely to the comics artists' styles -- except in the case of New Frontier, and that was because the writer/artist is Darwyn Cooke, an animator -- Timm is IMO making a choice to do new designs with each DVD in order to make this line of DVDs, which are often PG-13, distinct from the all-ages JLU Universe.

ShutupRob: "The direct-to-DVD DC movies are NOT a continuation of the Justice League Unlimited versions of the characters."

I knew that. Sigh. Just wishful thinking on my part, is all.

New Frontier was awesome, wasn't it?

Oh yeah, New Frontier was awesome. I think Boreanaz should play Hal in a live action Green Lantern movie. Especially since he's actually a fan of the character.

Definitely! To be honest, his parts were my favorite--and that's saying a lot as Bats is my fave--just didn't see enough of Bats, and well, I'm not sure Sisto was the right person to play him. Yeah, yeah, Conroy is the iconic Bats, and they were doing a period piece. But for me, Conroy will always and forever be Batman, lol.

Since we're continuing the idea of live action casting (here's hoping they can get that off the ground sometime this century!): I'm still holding out for Lynda Carter as Hippolyta.

I still kind of wish they'd have picked up The Hiketeia as the story to produce, but that's just me I suppose.
