Exclusive: CBS' Big Bang Sci-com Gets Asimov's Vote
Jim Parsons and Johnny Galecki in The Big Bang Theory by Robert Voets/CBS
This, friends, is nearly on par with Henry Gray stumping for Mer-Der via séance. Robyn Asimov, daughter of the late Isaac Asimov ("the prolific writer, scientist and charismatic geek," as she herself puts it) reached out to us in response to a TVGuide.com feature on CBS' The Big Bang Theory, and to share her especially qualified affinity for the show about a pair of quirky physicists. "[It] is delightfully witty, a brilliant mix of intelligent dialogue with comedy, and absolutely spot-on regarding the wonderful, cerebrally sexy world of nerds," she told us.
Asimov — who in 2004 countered film critics with her support of the big-screen take on her father's I, Robot short-story series, and now is chairman and trustee of his estate — referenced this week's episode, saying that "discussing my father’s Three Laws of Robotics during the hysterical conversation among three of the cast members, theorizing if one was a robot — and would he want to be told — was priceless."
In closing, she shared her wish for The Big Bang Theory's success and offered "cheers to [the show] for making geeks truly lovable — as lovable as I found my father to be."
In response to the very special rave, Big Bang's taken-aback cocreator Bill Prady told TVGuide.com: "We are our characters, so we are as thrilled to hear from Ms. Asimov as Sheldon and Leonard would be!"

What a terrific news item. This show is the big surprise of the season for me. I absolutely love it, but just wish they would dial back the laugh track. It is too much, but otherwise a wonderfully enjoyable show with intelligent dialog.

Ugh! What's next? Sunny von Bulow endorsing Kaley Cuoco's performance? I would think true geeks would snub such low-brow attempts at sitcomedy.
Bring back The New Adventures of Old Christine!!!

I enjoy this show--it's funny and does explore the inner geek in everyone.... I'm glad she spoke up.

I think this is great - I really enjoy The Big Bang Theory and it is so much more appealing than Two and a Half Men (as funny as that show is, too). I hope Big Bang has a successful run. And even though Kaley Cuoco isn't the greatest actress, she's so much more likeable and funny here than I ever found her in Eight Simple Rules and (erk) in Charmed.

With this, Chuck, Pushing Daises, and the return of 30 Rock, I definitely think this is the year of the geeks! Good for us!

Good point, SNLfan. Add Reaper to that list. See? There are plenty of really good "geek" shows on TV! I just don't think The Big Bang Theory is one of them (and I'm a big Chuck Lorre fan).

I love my Monday Night CBS funny shows. This one is okay, to ME it's not "Monday Night" worthy. I hope it make it, but on another night. The show gets a C+ from me. Monday Night Comedy shows are usually all A+. Again, this is my opinion. Thanks. P. Lovett

I love Big Bang Theory. I agree that it is the surprise of the season. And I think that Ms. Asimov's quote below, succinctly captures what I love about it.
"[It] is delightfully witty, a brilliant mix of intelligent dialogue with comedy, and absolutely spot-on regarding the wonderful, cerebrally sexy world of nerds,"
Rock on Big Bang Theory!

That's Henry GrEy, not Gray, thank you very much.
Thrilled that Isaac's little girl is as excited by the show as I am.

Loved the conversation on the three laws. I grew up going to the Third Avenue Book Fair when they used to give lots of free stuff away and Mr. Asimov used to sit in a booth signing books..ULTRACOOL! How come we do not have a blog for this show yet?
