ESPN's Dan Patrick Decides It's Game Over

After serving up 18 years of wonderfully snark-flavored sports coverage, Dan Patrick announced on Monday his resignation from ESPN, where he has anchored SportsCenter and hosted an eponymous radio show. Noting that "I've spent a third of my life at ESPN," Patrick tells Variety he wants to "try something different," but specified no next step following his August 17 ESPN sign-off.

Recently, Patrick's name unexpectedly entered the "Who will host The Price Is Right?" mix, but he turned down the job. "I didn't think it was the right time to do something like that, but I did appreciate them inquiring," Patrick tells the Reporter, adding, "No, I'm holding out for Wheel of Fortune."

Why couldn't it be Chris Berman instead?

It will be interesting to see what his next job is.... It's not like he's Keith Obermann, who is a natural on MSNBC.

I don't think he would make a good game show host.

In the early 90's Dan Patrick, Keith Obermann, and Craig Kilborn made SportsCenter a show you could watch 3-4 times in a row. Now look at both of Dan's main former partners. Kilborn left to help create the Daily Show then moved to the Late Late night slot after Letterman at CBS. Obermann is now the most popular and interesting commentator in cable news, not to mention a semi-regular hour-long co-host on the Dan Patrick Show on ESPN Radio.

If Dan was trying to become as visible as Craig was "The Price is Right" would have worked, but if he wanted to be as important as Keith, running the Plinko board wasn't going to cut it.

SC was at its peak with the Patrick/Olbermann/Mayne trifecta. Ley/Steiner were great as well.

He's going to host a new sports/entertainment reality show with the likes of Pacman and Tank called "Lap-Dancing with the Starzz."

Mr Furley - is that the best insult you can come up with?

Dan Patrick has forgotten more about sports than you will ever know. His voice alone can carry him - think Mike Rowe here folks! His voice is everywhere!

That's sad. He was one of the few likeable people left on ESPN.

I'm just waiting for him to exit his limo sans-underwear!:_|

PS I like DP-I'm going to miss his article in ESPN the Mag (however, they don't mention whether or not he'll stop doing that--I'm just assuming) I just find it suspect on both sides that he is leaving to persue "other projects"--at least he didn't say that he wanted to "spend more time with his family!"

I read a rumor somewhere that he's being considered as the permanent replacement for Don Imus. Might be a good fit for him.

ESPN will miss one of the few adult announcers they have left. The station is pandering to the young show off, all about me group anyway.
I rarely watch anymore. I do enjoy Kenny Mayne, Linda Cohn , Bob Ley but I could do with out most of the rest who want to make themselves the story.
Good luck Dan but there are very few places left for intelligent sports reporters anymore.
