ER Duo Confirm They're Ready to Check Out

The big screen is beckoning ER’s most senior medicos. Goran Visnjic and Maura Tierney (aka deliciously moody lovebirds Luka and Abby) confirmed for TV Guide that they’re on their way off the show. (Word of Visnjic's exit was broken in late February by Ausiello.) “I’m pretty sure I’m leaving after next year,” says Tierney, while Visnjic says he expects to do “a couple” — fewer than five — episodes next season. As TV Guide’s Sexiest Doc and Dad says, “We’re still talking about how and when we’re going to do it. But it’s kind of a logical progression because every summer I want to do a movie and... there are always problems with my scheduling. I think it’s a nice run to be on a show for eight years.”

Similarly, Tierney says she loves ER and her costars, but would like to do more features. (Currently she’s filming Semi-Pro with Will Ferrell and Woody Harrelson.) Although Tierney has asked the producers to whack Abby when the day comes, both actors believe the writers prefer a happy ending for the tempest-tossed pair. Gee, and we were hoping for another killer helicopter. — Reporting by Ileane Rudolph

Aww this makes me sad. Abby is my favorite character on ER. I really hope they don't kill her. A happy ending for her and Luka would be great. Maybe they'll move away or something. I don't how the show will be without Abby. She's honestly one of the reasons I continue to watch. She'll be missed!

I agree, I'm not sure I'll enjoy ER anymore without Abby. They might as well just end it now. Neela & Tony certainly aren't going to be able to carry the show.

I agree that it is time for the ER to close its doors. Did Maura Tierney really say that she wants the writers to kill Abby? That's kind of depressing.

I thought next year was gonna be the final season anyway? It probably should be. Although, It's in its what, 11th/12th year right now, and I think it's great. But at the same time I only started watching in 2003, so... At any rate, I don't really care for Kovac but Abby's definitely one of my favorites. At least she's not leaving soon.

It's time to end ER. Most people I know are shocked when I tell them ER is still on. They are always like "Why?" I tell them it's because NBC doesn't know when to let a show go.

ER should have ended while on top or at least why they have some dignity but it's too late for that. Now it just needs to die.

Well, this should be the end of ER! Unless they bring all the old "regulars" for a last hoorah at County, this show needs to end. I love Luka and I like Abby enough -- LOVE my little Luby and I hope they leave together and ALIVE!!

The remaining cast doesn't carry a large enough fanbase to keep the millions of viewers ER is used to. I love Parminder Nagra but she alone can't carry the show, neither can Stamos and I don't think Pratt or Morris are even that popular. The only way for me to keep watching is to bring back the old gang for one last hoorah: Hathaway, Corday, Carter, Weaver, Benton, Lewis, etc, etc...

I'd love to see the regular cast back but sadly Mark is dead so we won't see him. Unless it's in a dream by one of the other originals.

NBC, if you're reading this please end the show. It's been on life support for so long now that it's basically brain dead. Let it go and rest in peace. It would be the right thing to do.

The show hasn't been renewed past next season so this could all be a moot point anyway.

However, if Maura Tierney is leaving the show, it should be the last season. None of the other characters is even close to being the centerpiece of the program like Abby is.

ER is still on? I stopped watching when they decided no one could laugh or have fun at County General.

I am sorry that these two are leaving, personally for me they are the only reason I watch it nowadays and I sincerely hope that its a happy ending I have waited so long for miss Abby to be happy hehe.

I agree that it would be nice to have the old cast reunited maybe as a surprise for a going away party for Abby and Luka xD Though I do love the show and probably will keep watching after they are gone .

I'm another longtime "ER" fan who feels Maura Tierney is the best thing about the show, although I do enjoy everyone else in the cast, I hope she continues to get the spotlight for the rest of her time there. It would be too depressing to continue watching it without her, although the show's history has shown that it can survive the exit of its most popular characters.
But to me, Abby is special!

Aww...I guess I expected this news at some point. I read somewhere that Maura's contract was signed through the 14th season so I expected her to stay. As a viewer since the show's first season I have said I would quit watching before. Maura Tierney is the sole reason that I have stayed through the past several seasons. Quite frankly, if the show goes beyond her contract, they are going to have to have something pretty spectacular happening to keep me as a viewer. But I will never say never. The show has evolved with every cast change and surprised me before....and old 10 pm Thursday night 'habits' are hard to break.

O.K.

The show should end NOW.

The show started the downward spiral after Anthony Edwards left. Then I had to sit through several more painful departures (Paul McClaine's death STILL hurts!!!). And I barely watched this season at all. So now the only reason that I'm still hanging on to this show, namely Luka and Abby,is gone?

O.K. The show is brain dead. Pull the plug.

It's still a well-written hour where the genre often outshines the interchangeable cast. It gets interesting when people come and go like in real life. Stanley Tucci is sure to be a welcome addition. There isn't much competition in that hour (Shark, c'mon... a James Woods crime drama? What am I, 65?) anyway. May ER thrive. NBC has much bigger problems.
