At the Emmys: Filthy Mouths Win Big, Idol Avoids Biggest Loser Title

Gold mixed with blue at Saturday night's Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony. Though HBO's Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee took home the most kudos — five statues in all — several major wins either were born of or unexpectedly led to salty language.
Where to start? Kathy Griffin, whose Life on the D-List won best (non-competition) reality program, mock-scoffed at those who thank J.C. for their good fortune by saying (and I apologize for sharing this on a Sunday morning), "Suck it, Jesus, this award is my god now." Also using salty slang in accepting her award was Elaine Stritch, named best guest actress in a comedy (for her turn on 30 Rock). "It's kind of obvious how long I've been in this profession," said Stritch. "And I can't get over that I still feel the way I do. It's unf--kingbelievable."
Another veteran actress, Leslie Caron, was Stritch's counterpart in the drama race (for her appearance on Law & Order: SVU), while Stanley Tucci (Monk) and John Goodman (Studio 60) were the honored guest actors.
The poster child for potty mouths, South Park, was named best animated series (for its "Make Love, Not WarCraft" eppy), and the Saturday Night Live digital short "D**k in a Box" — featuring Andy Samberg, Justin Timberlake and a couple of well-wrapped packages — won for original music and lyrics. Addressing "sequel" talk backstage, Samberg said, "We talked about 'B***s in a Bucket,' but I just don't think it's as catchy."
In the outstanding casting contests, Friday Night Lights (drama) and Ugly Betty (comedy) emerged victorious.
One last noteworthy win: American Idol avoided besting the dubious record set by Newhart (which went 0-for-25 at the Emmys) by finally grabbing some gold, in the outstanding technical direction category (for "Idol Gives Back"). It was a first win six years in the making — but that's what you get for making us endure three commercial breaks for the damn results.

Not long ago, I probably would have decried Hollywood's fascination with four-letter words, but all of the recipients cited in this story are worthy of the awards they've won, in my opinion.
Just as many people seem to finally be coming to the realization that not everything HBO produces is brilliant, I am starting to "get" that falling back on the occasional obscenity is not necessarily a sign of laziness or pandering, as my grade four teacher used to insist.

This proves to me that Kathy Griffin is a brainless redhead with rooms for rent upstairs if you know what I mean....and I genuinely love redheads...but for her to take a shot at our Lord the way she did is totally un-professional. I never did like Kathy Griffin as an entertainer and this solidifies my never wanting to ever listen or see her on tv, in a theatre or in public!!!

I don't believe she was taking a shot at our Lord; she was taking a shot at all of the insipid speeches at awards shows where self-important celebrities get up to the mic and thank God and Sony (and not necessarily in that order). She was making a point, not trying to be blasphemous, and I think she did it well.

I disagree with you, she DID NOT make her point well. On the flip side, I find that comment disgusting and offensive. Just revolting.

LOL. Get over yourself people...she was mocking people who ... oh forget it ... it's obvious you never liked Kathy so it doesn't really matter what she says or does.

Profanity serves no purpose other than shock value. I'm tired of potty mouths and choose to watch shows that are a little more inventive with their dialog.

Yay for Kathy Griffin! I'm so glad she won. Given who she is, I think her acceptance speech was par for the course. Only she could do something so irreverent and get away with it! I can't wait to see her next season.

If you don't like the language take personal responsibility and don't watch. Funny - but I think God is big enough to handle it. Too bad people can't do the same and get the joke.
My first thought at reading was why the hell reward American Idol for such mediocrity?

I'm in a library and had to hold in a gleeful shout. I think resulting muffled snort and smile are making people stare. Yay Kathy! I almost worry that someone will say 'just kidding' and that she really didn't win. If you win an Emmy are you still on the D-List or does it bump you up at all? Major awards - Kathy Griffin 1, Lindsay Lohan 0. Kinda ironic (see Kathy's standup specials).
And I'm kinda happy Studio 60 got one for John Goodman. He did such a good job. Technically the show has an Emmy and the nom for Tommy Schlamme was icing on the cake. If he wins even better but glad that they recognized his terrific direction once again.
This time next year, Pushing Daisies folks. Make a note on your Emmy calendar.

Marcus, please don't dis Nick News. It has employed one of my News Gods (Linda Ellerbee) and therefore has good graces with me, even though I can't get their programming up here in Canada.
Scooby, I like to think an Emmy win doesn't elevate Kathy, it elevates the D-List. Wouldn't we be better off if the A-List were demoted to D???? (mm-hmm)
Tobias, even though your opinion opposes mine currently, I am not that far away from the days when I agreed with you, so I have to say I respect you for posting your thoughts. I'm somehow glad to see that you are out there. It's posts like yours that keep me honest, and I will be thinking about your input.

Thank you, Gord, I appreciate that
And I'd like to pose something for all of you who have said things along the lines of "God is big enough to handle it" or "Good for Kathy, only she can get away with it." I think it's a little sad that we live in a world where sometimes, public outrage seems to be directed not against someone who so boldy and so aggressively says something extremely offensive to religious individuals like myself; rather, by many, she is applauded for it. But the outrage DOES tend to be directed at people like Whoopi Goldberg, who said something completely harmless trying to hold a discussion about Michael Vick on "The View," but her words were twisted by the press, PETA got involved to try and get her to step down, people were making posts in outrage left and right...and over what turned out to be nothing. The bottom line for me is, religion is a sensitive subject for a lot of people, and should be treated with respect.

I'd like to say I'd hope I was enough of an adult not to let what any "Celebrity" anywhere says have a big impact on me. Why should it? I have the power to turn it off or on, do what I want. You're getting no outrage from me. Outrage is a choice - same as any other personal responsibility. Also, why does every thread have to ultimately be about every comment which offends and doesn't offend someone? Maybe we're too sensitive in this country. Something is definitely "off" by all of it.
Say what you feel and let everyone else say what they feel is my motto. It's disturbing these blogs are no longer blogs but are chat sessions where certain bloggers post about 6-10 times each thread and complain about people who only post once. They can do what they want and say what they want. Let the rest of us do the same and leave us out of your loony tunes world.
Tobias - none of the chat things are directed at you and are perhaps misplace in this post. Sorry about that. I need to follow my own personal rule and start only reading a thread once. I would also appreciate if you want to ask me a question about my post that you do it directly and respectfully. I'll respond in kind.

Just an honest question here, Tobias...
Why are you allowed to be offended by Kathy's comment yet I am not allowed to enjoy it?
Religion is a sensitive subject but to be only pro-religion is unrealistic and sad, for my own worldview. Why should people cater only to those who support religion?
Meh.
