Emmys 2008: Pressly Isn't Named Again, Poehler Scores for SNL

None of the men of Saturday Night Live found their names on the supporting comedy actor semifinalist list this year, but Amy Poehler is carrying the SNL torch for the ladies. Last year's winner Jaime Pressly, however, must be feeling the cold shoulder of the Academy, which overlooked her completely this time around. Another big snub is that of the luminous Sarah Chalke, who lights up not only Scrubs, but now also How I Met Your Mother.

With Pressly out and Poehler in, see who else is stacking up on the field of competition, thanks to GoldDerby.com:

Supporting Comedy Actress:
Kristin Chenoweth, Pushing Daisies
Conchata Ferrell, Two and a Half Men
Jenna Fischer, The Office
Jane Krakowski, 30 Rock
Judith Light, Ugly Betty
Elizabeth Perkins, Weeds
Amy Poehler, Saturday Night Live
Jean Smart, Samantha Who?
Holland Taylor, Two and a Half Men
Vanessa Williams, Ugly Betty

Longest comment of the week time! Here are my picks and predictions:

Kristin Chenoweth, Pushing Daisies
Deserved. She brings incredible passion and energy to her character.

Conchata Ferrell, Two and a Half Men
Uncertain; don't watch the show.

Jenna Fischer, The Office
Kind of deserved. While there have been a few great comedic moments this past season with Pam (the Michael/Jan dinner episode, in particular), I think this nomination would be more for her performance on The Office as a whole, rather than just this particular season.

Jane Krakowski, 30 Rock
Deserved. Playing a flaky, air-headed character may not necessarily be the best showcase for genius comedic chops, Krankowski has taken her material and made it completely hers.

Judith Light, Ugly Betty
Deserved. While Claire Meade has mellowed since the improbable courtroom episode, the earlier episodes with Claire and Yoga were pure comedy gold that were a short but sweet highlight of each week's episode.

Elizabeth Perkins, Weeds
Don't know. Don't watch. (Don't hate! Don't get Showtime.)

Amy Poehler, Saturday Night Live
Kind of. But with so many strong comedic talents, I could see Amy Poehler being squeezed out of this race. Her consolation prize should be reprising her role in the Arrested Development movie.

Jean Smart, Samantha Who?
Deserved. If she couldn't win one in the drama category for her insanely gripping Martha Logan, she can certainly get one by playing the coy foil on Samantha Who?.

Holland Taylor, Two and a Half Men
Uncertain; don't watch the show.

Vanessa Williams, Ugly Betty
Deserved. The character of Wilhelmina Slater could easily be an unbelievable cartoon in the hands of many actresses. But no matter how crazy or zany the plots get, Williams plays the insane with enough humanity to make it all believable.

Kristin Chenoweth! WOO! Now with Pushing Daisies and Anna Friel also in the Top 10 of their respective categories, this is a LOCK for Lee Pace right? God, I hope so.

And I REALLY hope they all make the Top 5 come July 17.

The Wire and Jaime Pressly belong on the list every year. And they should win most times as well. And it's great to see Jack McBrayer and the completely under rated Tracey Morgan being considered.

I'd go with:
Kristin Chenoweth, Pushing Daisies
Elizabeth Perkins, Weeds
Jane Krakowski, 30 Rock
Jenna Fischer, The Office

I love Vanessa Williams, but since she got fired from Mode she hasn't had as great of stories. Jean Smart mostly had one-liners... not a bad thing, since she was pretty funny, but not as good as the other ladies. Ditto to Judith Light.

As much as I love Jenna Fischer, she wasn't as funny this season. Krakowski was funny as always, but I thought Elizabeth Perkins and Kristin Chenoweth were really the best this season. I don't care which one of them wins: both are one of my favorite parts of their respective shows.

Kristen Chenoweth! Woo Hoo! She's fantastic on Pushing Daisies! That's three semifinalist nods for my beloved PD! Now if we could just get Lee Pace in there I'd be happy!

I totally and COMPLETELY disagree that this wasn't Jenna Fischer's funniest year. I never really thought she was funny until this year. From the beginning of the season til the end, she's hit it out of the park, IMO. I especially loved "Who said I didn't see it? Did Jim say I didn't see it? I SAW IT!" and "Dwight mercy-killed Angela's cat. It's very complicated. It's caused a lot of unpleasantness between Dwight and Angela, who are already prone to unpleasantness."

Not to mention: "Now that I think about it, Angela and Andy might actually make a good couple... but I couldn't do that to Dwight. Or Angela... or Andy."
&
"I don't care what they say about me I just wanna eat. Which I realize is a lot to ask for. At a dinner party!"

I especially loved her delivery of this: "There is a master key and a spare key for the office. Dwight has them both. When I asked, "what if you die, Dwight? How will we get into the office?" He said, "if I'm dead, you guys have been dead for weeks."

Point being, I think Jenna Fisher was incedibly strong this year, her deadpan delivery is really a treat. But I agree with everyone on this list except for the Two & a Half Men - don't get the appeal of that show. *shrug*

Jaime Pressly is usually great - but the show really didn't give her much this year I think. As a whole the show was kind of meandering all over the place. I'm looking forward to it getting back to basics next year.

And really - it's a hard year to judge with it being shortened and some shows had to change storylines because of the strike which may have affected some characters opportunities to shine.

I don't watch Two and Half Men much, but the women in it make the show. Without them, I don't see any reason to watch.

Jean Smart is great in everything she does and is one of the most underated comic actresses I think. It's great to see her back on tv in Samantha Who?

i would LOVE to see Holland Taylor win!

she's, like, an INSTITUTION! ALWAYS classy, timing is perfect, but the role she plays is also sexy and mean and snarky and just perfect. and she had a REALLY great season this year (although tvguide's blogs COMPLETELY IGNORED the whole show! booooo!!)!

The only shows I have seen so the only nominees I can comment on:

Kristin Chenoweth, Pushing Daisies
Jenna Fischer, The Office
Jane Krakowski, 30 Rock
Elizabeth Perkins, Weeds

Amy Poehler, Saturday Night Live
Jean Smart, Samantha Who?

The race boils down to my 2 favs. I love both of the characters and the women who protray them. Jane is fantastic as Jenna and Elizabeth protrays the worlds worst mother. It's a close race for me so I will declare the category a tie!

I love, love, love Amy Poehler but I thought there was always a seperate category for Performer in a Music/Comedy/Variety show? Maybe they changed things. At any rate I would love to see her nominated. But what about the equally fabulous Kristen Wiig?

Anyway, these would be my personal choices:

Amy Poehler, Saturday Night Live
Elizabeth Perkins, Weeds
Jenna Fischer, The Office
Vanessa Williams, Ugly Betty
Jane Krakowski, 30 Rock

Frankly any one of them could win and I'd be satisfied. Though I think Krakowski was kind of underused this year. I don't watch Pushing Daisies so can't comment on Chenoweth. As for the women on Two and a Half Men, the few times I've seen it it seems like all they do is observe and occasionally spit out a one-liner insult about one of the guys. I suppose it's funny, but is it award worthy acting? Me thinks not.

As much as I like Jenna, I would have preferred to see Angela Kinsey or Mindy Kaling on the short list.

And I'm happy to see Krakowski up there... the first season of 30 Rock I found her practically useless but this season, I found her hysterical.

Jaime Pressly suffered from a downhill season of Earl. The show is slumping and I have to think that's what hurt her.

Someone from 30rock nominated in the comedy category?? 30rock is NOT very funny. And why would someone be nominated from this show??....NO ONE watches it!
