Emmy Spreads the Love to Sopranos, 30 Rock
Tina Fey by John Shearer/WireImage.com
I pity the fool who wagered on a send-off Sopranos landslide in their office Emmy pool. Although the HBO hit walked away with best-drama, writing and directing statuettes, Boston Legal barrister James Spader beat James Gandolfini for best actor, while Brothers & Sisters mom Sally Field won best actress over Edie Falco.
On the lighter side, 30 Rock took best comedy, Ugly Betty star America Ferrera won best actress, and Extras mastermind Ricky Gervais was awarded best actor. (OK, Steve Carell actually took that last one, because Gervais wasn't there to collect it himself.)

After Jeremy Piven (whom I love) won again over NPH, I changed the channel because I didn't care anymore. James Spader? Really? Again? who's he sleeping with??
Although, Yay! Terry O'Quinn

I was very happy to see Terry O'Quinn win for "Lost", but after that I just didn't care. The TV was on, but I had laundry to put away and dishes to do. Ryan did okay, but that "theater in the round" was a pain I hope never returns.

I'm thrilled that the brilliant Ricky Gervais won the Emmy for Best Actor in a Comedy (for those of you who haven't seen "Extras", please do so!), but I was equally appalled by the insulting spectacle of Jon Stewart, Steve Carrell, and Steven Colbert dancing around the stage in a group hug, giving the award to Carrell as if he had actually won. Gervais has more comic talent in his little finger than the three of those guys put together, and to not properly congratulate him in his absence was incredibly disrespectful.
It's bad enough Gervais has never been properly honored in America for creating the original series "The Office" (most viewers think it's a purely American series), but that display added insult to insult. As much as I like Jon Stewart, he and his cronies really disgusted me by trouncing on the brief moment of credit Gervais has long deserved.

You do realize that Jon Stewart/Steve Carell are friends with Ricky Gervais, and nothing about that was impromptu.
And for Steve Carell to have a hand in making Gervais' absence less-felt is perfectly appropriate, since Carell is the one who took over for Gervais in The Office, and who has Gervais' full support as a peer and colleague.
Personally, I thought it was a fantastic Emmy ceremony, the first I've sat through in years. Good natured acceptances, casual atmosphere, awards meted out relatively equally (read: no boring Sopranos sweep for a lacklustre final season), some decent laughs, and 30 Rock getting some amazing recognition.
But to the crux of my comment, there was nothing disrespectful or out-of-place about a joke being made on Gervais' behalf. I would not in the least be surprised if he actually had a hand in arranging what would be done should he win, seeing as he has a relationship with both presenter (Stewart) and Carell.

Crashdown:
I wouldn't assume that Gervais gave that gag his blessing--to me, it robbed him of a major moment of recognition he deserves. Viewers who happened to tune in just at that point probably really thought that Carell had won. He's gotten more than enough exposure by now (for starring in a program that is merely an imitation of the original), so I can't find it so amusing that he had to barge his way into the all-too-brief moment Gervais had to be awarded for his wonderful work.

Okay to all the people saying Gervais was "robbed" of his moment...was he really robbed? Or can we consider that given away. After all, if it was such a significant moment in his career, he would have been there and this whole conversation wouldn't have happened.
Also, Ricky Gervais undoubtedly gets credit for being the creator of "The Office." Maybe no one remembers a few years back when "Office" practically swept the Emmys for comedy categories, and that was the major promotion when NBC premiered their version a year later.
As a matter of fact, everyone was so vocal about Ricky Gervais in this country that I was inspired to watch the second season of "Extras" -- which is hilarious -- when it premiered earlier this year.

It is easy for you to say please watch "Extras". However, a substantial number of viewers cannot afford HBO or other premium channels. I think it is not appropriate for the Academy to honor this dramas, including Sorpanos, which cannot be accessible by the majority of the viewers.
I think they should bring back Cable Ace award or something like that.
