Dropping Anchor: Dateline Cuts Stone Phillips

In a cost-cutting move, NBC News will drop Stone Phillips from Dateline when the veteran newsman's contract expires at the end of June. "It's been a wonderful 15 years," Phillips says in a statement cited by the AP. "I'm profoundly appreciative of the many friends and colleagues, past and present, who have been a part of the Dateline family. This is a great news division with a bright future. I wish the people of NBC News all the best."

Since Phillips won't be replaced, Ann Curry will continue as coanchor, with other Dateline reporters pitching in as on-air hosts.

I wish Stone well as he seeks other opportunities. I always enjoy his reporting.

Well, this may be good news for CBS, since they are firing Katie after the '08 elections, they can hire Stone now and keep him in the wings to take over, unless they fire Katie sooner.

It's stupid on NBC's part - Stone Phillips made the show for me; Ann Curry is not the person to foot the show - why can't they use Campbell Brown off the weekend Today. She has personality!

I dont know what is wrong with NBC these days, first they cancelled Passions to expand another hour of the Today show now this. I like Stone Phillips. He is very handsome. Cutting cost my foot.

What a shame. I really enjoy Stone Phillips' reporting. And his great deep voice made everything sound so interesting and suspenseful. Ann Curry's so dull. Not a good move NBC!

How dare they! Why did they have to get rid of Stone Phillips? They could've gotten rid of Chris Cuomo. I know that he works for ABC, but still...you know, get rid of him.
