Dominic Monaghan Joins Wolverine Cast

The blogosphere is buzzing that Dominic Monaghan (the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Lost) has been added to the increasingly more interesting X-Men Origins: Wolverine cast. He'll play Blackwing, a birdlike mutant who can fly, much like Ben Foster's character in X-Men 3: The Last Stand. Now I'm no comics geek, but the quality of this cast is making it more and more likely that I'll line up to see Wolverine in May 2009, even taking into account my aversion to the blandness that is Hugh Jackman. How about you? Are you going to sink your moviegoing claws (and dollars) into yet another X-Men movie? — Mickey O'Connor

Only a man would call Hugh Jackman as Wolverine "lame". He's pretty damn hot as Wolverine if you ask me. Too bad no one has! :-D

Seriously though, good news for Dom!

I'm just curious to see how he'll play himself in an origins film lensing some seven-plus years after X-Men 1. But I'm sure someone will educate me that Logan/Wolverine isn't subject to aging, and was born a 40-year-old man.

This is turning out to be Wolverine's X-Men not a Wolverine origin story. Wolverine is best when he is solo and not sharing the spotlight with too many other characters. I'm still seeing the movie of course, just putting in my two cents.

Well, the X-Men movies were some of the most over-rated, poorly written, badly acted comic book movies of the last decade or so ("Do you know what happens to a toad when it's struck by lightning? The same thing that happens to everything else." -- wow... clever).

So I hope they manage to make a good movie. The cast sounds cool enough, but it's all pointless without competent writing and directing.

Oh, and when referencing bad comic book movies, I tend to leave Superman Returns out of consideration because it's easier for me to pretend that movie never happened.

I know this is way late considering how long ago the first X-Men movie came out, but my first reaction when I saw who they got to play Woverine was, "What, they couldn't find a TALLER actor?!?" Hugh Jackman is over 6 feet, for chrissakes! Wolverine in the comic is supposed to be 5 feet and change!

This is TV GUIDE staffer, Joshua Green. I just wanted to clarify some of the information above. The character that Dominic Monaghan will be playing is actually named Beak! His named changed to Blackhawk in the comics after he lost all his abilities (including his bird-like appearance) and became human. (There was a wide-spread tragedy in the Marvel Universe where millions of mutants were permanently de-powered!) More information about the character can be found here!

Wolverine in the comic is supposed to be 5 feet and change!

That part always blows me away when I read X-men comics to my 5-year-old boys. He's often mocked/called nicknames because of his height!

As Joss has stated, the "lightning" line was supposed to be a sarcastic throw away. But Halle just hadda go ramp up the performance with her Oscar-(hack, hack)-caliber theatrics and over-deliver the line. Otherwise it would have worked.

Beak? Jeez, I'm a little more partial to Bird-Brain. Seriously. Beak works better without powers.

Waitaminute, what's BEAK of all mutants doing in Wolvie's origin tale? Just keep Sabertooth and Silver Fox (as they were part of Logan's past), and drop Gambit and Beak (as they weren't).

Yes, I am a comic book geek - got a problem with that, bub?;)

Wait did they cast GAMBIT? Sweet! Is it Josh Halloway?
Also did someone call Hugh Jackman as Wolverine bland? Hahahahaha! Good one!

ValkyrieX:

I agree. Using Kitty or, heck, even Jubilee makes a lot more sense.
