Dennis Hopper Joins TV's Crash Spin-off

Dennis Hopper has joined the cast of Crash, the upcoming Starz series based on the Oscar-winning film. Hopper will play Ben, a music producer who's been around the block a few times and is waiting for his Next Big Thing.

Hopper joins an ensemble that includes Clare Carey (Jericho), Ross McCall (CSI: NY) and Jocko Sims (CSI).

While there are no direct character overlaps with the film, the 13-eppy drama — the first original series for Starz — will explore the same theme of "social tolerance" and examine the notion of the American dream through each character's journey. Will the addition of Dennis make the show an easier ride for you? Or does the small-screen adaptation sound like it'll crash on arrival? — Anna Dimond

Series based on movies...few successful come to mind. M*A*S*H of course and I'm sure there are a few others. Most, however, do nothing to go beyond the premise og the original, and thus become pointless.

There were some TV shows based on movies that did pretty well, but I don't think Crash will survive for very long, either:

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (This one, like M*A*S*H, is better than the movie it was based on)
Bewitched - loosely based on I Married a Witch
The Dead Zone
Friday Night Lights
What's Happening - based on Cooley High
Hogan's Heroes - loosely based on Stalag 13
The Odd Couple
Stargate: SG-1
Stargate: Atlantis
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea
The Waltons - based on Spencer's Mountain
Peyton Place
In the Heat of the Night
The Courtship of Eddie's Father
Alice - based on Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore

Actually that should be "Hogan's Heroes - loosely based on Stalag 17".
