Letterman Makes Nice with Paris: "I'm Terribly Sorry"

Late Show with David Letterman by Jeffrey R. Staab/CBS
David Letterman on Friday night welcomed Paris Hilton back to his show, marking the celebutante's first appearance since Dave pestered her endlessly about her abbreviated jail stint.

Having thereafter realized he came off as rude, Letterman greeted Hilton this time by acknowledging, "I offended you. I'm not here to make enemies, honestly. I'm terribly sorry."

Paris welcomed Dave's mea culpa, smiling back, "You better not try it again. I hope you got the jail thing out of your system." Sure, it probably just took him 23 days, too.

David Letterman: A true gentleman.

Yes, Dave is a gentleman to be sure. So why is that skank still making the talk show circuit? Are they that hard up for guests?

I began watching Dave when I was 11 and he first started out on NBC--until I saw the way he treated Bill O'Reilly a couple years ago or so. It would be safe to say I probably disagree with both Dave and Bill on most social and political issues, but I've never seen a host be more rude and disrepectful to a guest on their show than Dave was that night. Maybe O'Reilly is just as bad on his show--I wouldn't know because I've never seen it and all I know about him is what I've read. I did see Dave though and was thoroughly disgusted. Haven't watched a minute of his show since.

It's great that he made nice with a nothing "celebrity" like Paris though. Good job Dave.

I don't watch Letterman, but I'm so disappointed that he actually believed Paris Hilton--that absolute nobody-- was worth having as a guest AGAIN.

Why should he apologize to her? The last time she was on the show,he asked her about something that every other interviewer had to tiptoe around just so they wouldn't upset the precious do-nothing heiress. I usually don't like Letterman, but I respected him more for that first talk with her than I do now that he felt he had to apologize for it.

And I hope none of the major talk show hosts ever have her on again.

1. Yes, she has a movie to promote.

2. It's sweeps, and this "reunion" (obviously) got press.

I must amend my original statement: David is a gentleman and the persons who used that degrading word aren't. (or if female, no class.)

Let me educate you a little... Bill O' Reilly is probably the rudest person on tv... If anyone disagrees with him, he just shouts them down... I would not use him as a reason not to watch Letterman... Letterman was giving O'Reilly a dose of his own medicine... You should catch his show The O'Reilly factor and then make your judgment...

Ha! I thought Dave was being very sarcastic and Paris didn't get it.

Like I said--I don't know much about O'Reilly and his show. That's irrelevant though, because I wouldn't give ANY show whose host treated their guest that way a another moment of my time. It's like inviting someone into your home for the sole purpose of being a jerk and telling them to get out.

To put it another way, I wouldn't have watched Dave again regardless of who he did that to. Being pushy with questions trying to get details is one thing, but the way he behaved that night said a lot more about him than about his guest.

I guess I'm just a treat others the way you wish to be treated sort, rather than an eye for an eye sort.

You and me both, ikmartin. There is a big difference to me between rudeness and humorous.

If Paris Hilton can't handle some good-natured joking from David Letterman, then she just needs to drop from the spotlight. 23 days in jail isn't enough for her!

He should have asked her how her halfway house for recently released women was coming along that she had plans for!

I think I agree with you ikemartin. I don't think Paris needs me to come to her defense. She's getting what is pretty close to a free ride as it is and I don't really have all that much use for her. But I think Letterman was inexcusably rude on her penultimate visit and he wasn't that much better on this one.

O-Reilly, on the other hand, prompted Dave's response himself by being obnoxious, mean-spirited and false as he always is on his own show as well. paris hasn't really done anything to anyone and while she may be many things that I and many others may not admire or particularly care about she was pretty gracious and at the very least polite to Letterman. Much moreso than he was to her.

Every now and the Dave's demons come out and he exposes a side of himself that is not very likeable. I hope it isn't old-fashioned of me to find that particularlyoffensive when it happens with a young female guest who may not be particularly profound or important but who is basically benign.
