Daniel Radcliffe to TV Guide: Split Potter Finale a "Positive Thing"

Daniel Radcliffe says he "had an inkling" that one of cinema's biggest franchises would cleave its finale into two films, but still cheers the official decision to turn Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows into a two-part series-ender. "It's a really positive thing," the actor told TV Guide during a call to promote Masterpiece Classic: My Boy Jack (airing April 20 on PBS). "And I think the fans will appreciate that more than had we tried to make it into one film. We'd have to cram so much in there and actually have to skip over some things. And in this seventh book, there are a lot of things you can't afford to skip over."

That's not to say that director David Yates and the writers don't have some work cut out for them. "The challenge now is for them to find out where the breaking point is between the two films," says Radcliffe, "because I don't think there is an obvious place [to do so]."

The timetable for the big finale? "When I finish the sixth film [Half-Blood Prince], which I'm shooting now, I'll take some time off — I'm doing Equus on Broadway — and a while after that I'll get on the Hallows films, which we'll film as one. That will begin early-ish next year." — Matt Mitovich, with reporting by Ileane Rudolph

What's your take? Is a more complete Hallows a fair trade-off for having to wait a bit longer for big-screen closure?

I wish they had turned "The Order of the Phoenix" into two parts. With such rich books a lot of the detail and plot development is lost in the movie version purely for time sake. Good move!

I think it's a very positive thing - it will be well-done and not a piece of garbage because they will be thorough instead of cutting out crucial things. Plus, it gives us fans one more Potter thing to look forward to, which will be nice, ultimately, since the book series is over.

Glad to hear they are doing that! There is soooo much in the book, I would hate to see it chopped up to fit in one movie.

This young man continues to impress me with his choices and his professional manner. But I'm gonna say it if nobody else will: the mustache, the brown shirt, the hairstyle - it all looks a little "Great Dictator" to say the least, right?

I'm so glad they're splitting the movies up to leave mroe stuff in. However, Daniel says it as if they usually don't leave stuff out. That's a lie. They skip so many interesting parts of the books. Thank god they're splitting the movies up. I can't wait until November 21st!

I'm thrilled. OotP is a great movie. However, it pains me to watch knowing how much was left out. So this is great. I posted on another site that I think Chapter 17 Batilda's Secret should be the end of Part 1. It would be a great cliffhanger ending for those who haven't read the book

Batilda's Secret is a good place to stop, but if Steve Kloves(?) isn't writing the script, than that is when I will pitch a fit!! Kloves is the main HP script writer and the one movie that he couldn't do was OttP and you can tell! But I heard that he's back for HBP so HOPEFULLY we can get back on track:)

I'm all for Deathly Hallows, the film, being split into 2 films.
Also in agreement in Batilda's Secret being a good place to end part 1.

With all this talk, I now have to re-read (again) the book. This will be my 3rd read but 4th time through, since I listened to it on CD.

Oh and for the record since this question comes up often on HP discussion boards (how old are you?), I'm 48.

As long as Jo Rowling approves, I'm good.

There are certain things that are going to need to come in somehow because they were in earlier books, but not movies, that are needed in the 7th movie. (i.e. without giving too much away: the mirror from book 5, hogs head, etc.)

And I agree that Batilda's Secret is a great place.

I was thinking the final *location* could be a movie in and of itself, y'know.
