Dane Cook: Funny or... Not So Much?

[Editor's Note: It is April 1, so all of the following could turn out to be untrue. Carry on!]

Comedian Dane Cook has been voted the "unfunniest" comic by a Boston radio poll modeled after the NCAA's March Madness brackets.

Cook "won" over comedy punching bags like Paula Poundstone, Sinbad, Jeff Foxworthy and Carlos Mencia. The poll, which aired on WBCN's Toucher & Rich Show, is obviously not science. But was there any truth to the results? Cook is a wildly popular performer whose albums have cracked the Billboard Top 10 — a rarity for a comedy album. His rabid online audience floods both his website and MySpace page. Critics say he steals jokes. And his movie career (Employee of the Month, Good Luck Chuck) — well, it hasn't exactly set the world on fire.

Nevertheless, I have to confess a weakness for his Car Alarm and Nothing Fights routines (warning: clips do contain a few naughty words), but I get why he can annoy.

What do you think? Does Cook deserve so much derision? — Mickey O'Connor

Well...I listen to Toucher & Rich on my way home from work and they were talking about this last week...So I don't think it is an April Fool's joke! Thank you so much for putting the links to Dane Cook. For quite some time I have heard that Dane Cook is NOT funny ~ But I had never heard any of his comedy. So at last I have heard it and the verdict I M O.............NOT FUNNY!:O

I didn't think he was horrible ~ Not the worst on that list anyway....

Coincindentally I don't think Toucher & Rich are very funny either but luckily it's only a 10 min ride home!:-D

Dane Cook is wildly overrated! I have never understood his popularity, because in my opinion, he is NOT funny! So I don't think this is an April Fool's joke either. Kind of glad to see the backlash.

They should have called the list "Most Overrated Comic".

I'd say the list is right on...

I think he's funny, he makes me laugh. Is he the best? No. But he's certainly not the worst either - not over Jeff Foxworthy or Larry the Cable Guy!

Oh no, it's completely real. He also beat Jay Leno, Robin Williams, Dave Coulier, Gallagher, Margaret Cho, George Wallace, Paul Riser, Jimmy Fallon, Larry the Cable Guy and Christopher Titus. After all those "There's only one October" MLB on Fox commercials I'd be happy to never hear his voice again. And Dane...there is more than one October, just wait 6 more months!

I wouldn't pay to see one of his movies but I'd definitely sleep with him.

This totally cracked me up! Goes right along with him being so popular yet not so funny.

Or was that an April Fool?

I've always been astounded by Dane Cook's popularity.

The first time I saw him doing his act (on TV, not in person), I thought, "Well, every comedian has an off performance once in a while."

Since then, I've seen him numerous other times -- including on one of the most stomach-churningly bad Saturday Night Lives in recent years (and that's saying something) -- and he is BAD every time.

Exactly how many hits off the bong does one have to take to find this guy funny? Way too many, I would guess.

He totally deserves this "accolade" -- although Sinbad, Carlos Mencia and Gallagher are pretty rock-bottom, too. I would add George Lopez, too.

Jay Leno was funny many, many years ago -- but as he rose through the ranks on the Tonight Show from regular guest host to permanent host, he (for some reason) made the decision to cater to the wasted frat boy demographic.

And this mentality begat the Dancing Itos. 'Nuff said.

Carlos Mencia was robbed. But I guess given how much material he has reportedly robbed from others, I guess this is a weird form of karma.

As for Dane Cook, he is a worthy runner-up.

I agree, Carlos Mencia was robbed. That guy is horrible.

I haven't heard any of Dane's stuff, but going off what I'm seeing, I wouldn't be surprised if part of his popularity is because he's (generally) attractive.

Ok no one else will so I'll admit it. I love Dane Cook. And I have never taken "a hit off the bong" so you can knock that one off as an excuse. I got into him years ago when NO ONE knew who he was. He was funnier then but he is still pretty funny now. I will admit that his movies have generally sucked but his stand up is hilarious, go back to the 1st CD it's great. I get how some people won't like him but lots of those other guys are way worse. Ok everyone can criticize me now.
