First Look: The Smallville/Supernatural Comic-Con Bag

I know, I know — I raised my eyebrow, too. But I have since been educated by a lovely lady that at last summer's Comic-Con, Warner Bros.' oversized Smallville tote (featuring the animated Superman: Doomsday movie on the reverse) was quite the unexpected sensation, and as such was snatched up at a super-fast rate — with several especially passionate fans fashioning the freebie into convention-appropriate clothing.

Thus, I bring you a first look at the two-sided, 26 inch-by-29 inch Smallville/Supernatural carry-all coming to Comic-Con next week, but one of several limited-edition goodies being unveiled by WB. Check out the "Daily Planet" headlines about Lionel's "suicide" and the FoS explosion. Poor Chloe's arrest apparently got relegated to page 2. Gal can't catch a break! — Matt Mitovich

I saw a lot of those bags on ebay last year. I was gonna get one for my sister since she likes smallville AND bags, but they were going for more than I wanted to pay. (of course, most of that was probably not wanting to get ripped off on shipping)

I still have last year's tote bag; that sucker was so big, a a fellow con attendee told me his 4-year-old was able to fit inside! (And yes, a cute gal was able to fashion the bag into a minidress.)

The new bag... while most certainly useful, it just isn't as eyecatching as last year's model. Still, I'll be one of those Comic-Con fans lugging it around!

For anyone interested, here's last year's bag:

(And I'm still looking for pictures of the gal who fashioned a dress from it.)

Matt, you should have seen the feeding frenzy that erupted whenever the Warner people pulled out the Smallville bag last year - if you were anywhere in the vicinity, you could get trampled, elbowed, tripped, and body-checked!! It was insane!!

The freebies at Comic-Con are always in huge demand, but the reaction to those bags was truly extraordinary. I hope the Supernatural/Smallville combo ones prove similarly popular.

Perhaps the bags from last and this year might make decent shopping/grocery bags? Could be a convo starter for some single folks!

ValkyrieX:

Here's the picture of the clever gal who sewed a dress from the Smallville bag:

Took me a minute to remember where I first saw this: from 2007 special guest Cory Doctorow's photos of the con.

Although I don't go to conventions I read comics until I was in my mid-thirties so I have nothing against them or people who like them. But you just wrote a comic about a tote bag. A tote bag. Great Caesar's ghost!

rhinogirl - THANKS! I had seen a picture of the same gal in the SDCC's preview magazine, but it wasn't on comic-con.org (where you'd think it would be).

Mary - Yeah, I remember that feeding frenzy... I ended up getting my bag due to being shoved to the front by everyone else behind me!

The reason why people were/are clamoring for those bags is because there's so much stuff being given away (and bought), that any type of free bag is a godsend (the Viz booth also was running out of bags, though theirs weren't as big as the WB booth's).

Darclyte - I never thought of using my bag as a shopping tote due to its size, but now you've given me an idea...

I don't believe I like Matt's snarky tone about the Smallville bags. No, it was downright disrespectful, as if he doesn't even want the darn thing. I think Matt should give his bag to me. Hand it over, buddy. *did it work?*

Shucks!! Oh well, I may not have my own personal cool Super Boy bag but I've been training like a fiend with Bela Karolyi and I'm confident I will make it to Comic Con in 2010!

Hi, the bags look like fun -- can we order some? Of course we would be willing to pay for our goodies.
