Columbia Students Protest Lost Star as Speaker

Sorry, Charlie Salinger. Or much less politely, "Get Lost." That's the message from an editor for Columbia University's undergrad magazine, who in this "bwog" summons peers to protest alum Matthew Fox's serving as Class Day speaker on May 15. "We're not anti-entertainment snobs.... We're not going to pretend we wouldn't have bitched no matter who [it] was.... We're not trying to be mean," writes the daily editor for The Blue and White. "But we want a Class Day speaker that has accomplished more than being hot and lucking into [two popular TV shows]." Citing the likes of Anna Paquin, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Brian De Palma as more esteemed alumni, the editor says, "Fox's invitation to speak should be rescinded."

Wow, kinda puts a whole new spin on Jack's tattoo: "He walks among us, but he is not one of us."

Ouch. But did they ever think that the others turned the offer down and they should just be happy with who they got?

Exactly what I'd expect from Columbia College, one of the most notoriously whiny, snobbish schools in the country. Fox will probably get pressure to cancel now that this story has gone national, but I hope he sticks it to 'em and gives them a speech they will never forget.

By the way, Matthew Fox lucked into two popular TV shows? I only count one... (much as I wish Party of Five HAD been popular)

Let me get this straight -- Dan Futterman is a preferable speaker over Matthew Fox? One could just as easily say that Futterman "lucked into" that Oscar nomination.

For the most part, an actor doesn't "luck into" lead roles on two different series in his (or her) career -- he (or she) earns them. And to have had lead roles on two critically-praised, popular series says even more about that actor.

(For the record -- and if I recall correctly -- Jack was originally supposed to be played by Michael Keaton and was slated to die early in the show's run. Fox obviously impressed the producers enough that they not only kept the character around but made him one of the more prominent on the show.)

This is scary. I actually agree with nolan. (I'm kidding, nolan -- don't go nuclear on me.)

One minor quibble: Considering Party of Five had the disadvantage of being on FOX, I still think it's accurate to call it popular. Like some of FOX's other '90s hits -- 90210 and Melrose Place -- it wasn't in the Top 10, but it had watercooler conversation and press buzz on its side.

If Colombia doesn't want him, we'll take him in the Bronx at Fordham.

What a bunch of snobs. Matthew Fox should tell them to GFT.

Thanks for the link. There was an email link to the editors so I was able to tell them where to place their snobbery.

Chappy Quiddick,

For the sake of accuracy, TPTB for Lost had already decided to not kill the character of Jack before Matthew Fox was cast in the role. So Fox can't get credit there.

I just linked onto their article site ready to really whip their butts and tell them they WERE being mean, and snobbish, and ill informed, and then I read the article - at least the beginning and the end - flipped thru the middle - and saw the quotes from the interview with Fox that also had given me pause for thought when I first read it (instigator, fighter, the need to shock people, etc etc)and I thought of how disappointed in Fox I was after reading it and that from this as a prospective he certainly didn't look like someone for them to look up to. Nonetheless I was going to say WAIT until you see what he has to say, and then I read the closing sentence that no matter what he says etc etc etc. He didn't come across as a role model to me after reading what he'd said, but I forgot it intentionally because I love him, and the show, BUT can see why they would hanker for someone else. Not a do as I say, not as I do speaker. Too bad. At face value they were WRONG but think about it, maybe they weren't.

Oh, come on, so Fox mouthed off in one interview. How many of us would honestly say that WE are role models? And it sounds like he was very honest and self-aware, probably a lot more than the more "illustrious" candidates the whiny college kids wanted.

Besides, that interview doesn't have anything to do with it. Fox himself probably doesn't have much to do with it. Look at who they suggested instead. Seriously -- Anna Paquin? Maggie Gyllenhall? I love them both, but they're actors, just like Fox. The difference -- they're MOVIE actors, and Fox is TV. This is just plain old TV vs. movies snobbery. Did they not get the memo about how most American movies are stupid and irrelevant these days, while TV is where most of the best writing, directing and acting is happening?

(And no, I am not singling out "American movies" as dumber than those in other countries -- but I don't see a lot of foreign films and can't judge them.)

Hey Gang,

This is Robert Maschio, the actor who plays High-Five Todd on the TV show SCRUBS. As I am also a graduate of Columbia University ('88), I just wanted to say, if it doesn't work out with Matthew Fox, I would be more than willing to fly in, show up and give a "great" commencement speech...well, it wouldn't be a great speech so much as a "series of hi-fives to all graduates and a series of sexually inappropriate comments" aimed mostly at the administration. Of course I'd be wearing my trademark "Banana Hammock" the whole time...(for the ladies), so...just something to consider and enjoy...good luck and let me know. My only hope is to inspire those just starting out in life...
