Cindy Crawford: Jennifer Love's Bikini Backlash Was "So Mean"

Supermodel Cindy Crawford is super-supportive of Jennifer Love Hewitt, who last week railed against the paparazzi's invasion of privacy — as well as the nastiness of anonymous bloggers — when photos of the Ghost Whisperer in a bikini splashed across the 'Net. "It was so mean, and there's no reason for it," Crawford told TV Guide Saturday at the Beverly Hills Presbyterian Church's annual Christmas Celebration benefiting Malibu Presbyterian Church, Crawford's home church, which burned to the ground during the Malibu fires. "She wasn't on the beach saying, 'Hey, I think I look fantastic from any angle at any time so take my picture.' She was just on the beach being herself."

Referring to pics snapped of her own recent beach getaway, Crawford says, "I am 41 and I've had two kids, so people, I know I look different than I did when I was 20. I’m telling you I know I do, so you don’t have to point it out to me. Every woman, we know our own faults better than the paparazzi know them. It’s just mean-spirited to take a terrible picture. I mean, why [do it]?"

The sad answer: because the darker corners of the newsstand offers a forum for such "exposés." "As long as we’re buying those magazines," Crawford notes, "we’re creating a market for that." — With reporting by Bekah Wright

I think it's sad that this is what's on TV Guide's Breaking News headline. Television is in a sad state. Thanks a lot strike!

I haven't been all that impressed with some of the comments of the actresses and models who have commented on the Jennifer Love Hewitt photo controvery. Just look at Cindy Crawford's comments: "Every woman, we know our own faults better than the paparazzi know them. It’s just mean-spirited to take a terrible picture." It just seems like 1) CC has fallen into that typical woman mode where her body is something that is and always will be a source of unhappiness (ie, it's flawed, not perfect, and I know it) and 2) that she missed JLH's point, which I think was that JLH thinks she looks great and is happy with her body just the way it is. It's not about bad angles and mean-spirited photographers. It's about women coming in all shapes, sizes, and colors and not being held to an arbitrary "ideal."

...and I miss the days when TV Guide wasn't one of those magazines.

Good observation, Liz985. Maybe as an ex-model, she's been brainwashed to think of her body as a commodity that needs to be as perfect as possible instead of just embracing it.

Jennifer Love Hewitt says women with curves are beautiful and the size of a woman isn't what determines her beauty, yet she still obviously feels the need to label herself a size 2 and to make sure that label is included in her statement about the pictures. Like "I'm a size 2, I'm a size 2, I'm not fat!" What a hypocrite.

When I 1st saw JLH's photos I thought, "wow, she looks like a REAL woman" and felt happy for a moment that she didn't look like all the other skinny-minnies in Hollywood. She kinda looks like how *I* look from behind.

THEN I read all the HORRIBLE things people were saying and it made me feel like total crap about myself. I guess these are the things people would say about me too :(

I thought she looked happy and beautiful in those pictures and I'm glad she and others are standing up to what has been said about her.

We all can't look like models. I'm 4'11" and I will never, ever, no matter how much I pray, ever look like a model.

Carrie0930:

It's not television that's in a sad state--it's TV Guide that's in a sad state. I find it to be increasingly pandering to the lowest common demonator of its readership, with gossipy, insipid non-stories like this one. It sank to a new low a few weeks ago with that revalation about how Britney Spears lost her virginity while in her early teens. But I guess there's always room to sink lower.

This magazine, both in print and on-line, is in danger of becoming little more than a source with which to feed its readers crap about semi-celebrities and their various off-screen indescretions, scandals, photo-ops, and other idiotic activities that don't mean ANYTHING.

I still return to this site in hopes of finding the occasional morsel of reasonably intelligent reporting/writing about TV programs or issues related to them. And I enjoy the opportunity to offer my opinions of various programs and reading those of others. But TV Guide is on the slippery slope to becoming another one of those celebrity-soaked rags that aren't worth the paper they're printed on.

I hope the younger staff members and editors might take the time to check out editions of the magazine from 10 or even 5 years ago, when it offered real stories and reviews, and didn't cram the obituaries of TV legends into a column space the size of a postage stamp.

What's the big deal? I mean yeah people are gonna be jerks and say stuff, but I say it's kinda nice to know that even women like JLH sometimes would rather be comfortable for a minute. Who wants or even has the time to work out on a regular schedule? On the contrary women like models, who physically are inattainable for most 'real' women, are in the minority. So ask yourself, what are your odds?

Who is to blame? What blame? She was certainly not at fault for wearing a bikini, and as sad as it is that some must make money from legal voyeurism we are all aware that paparazzi are bottom feeders so why is anyone surprised? Its not a matter of blame its just a really silly thing that has been blown out of proportion because we as Americans have too much spare time.

You need an "All of the Above" option on your poll, but ultimately, if people didn't buy the magazines or click on the items online, the TMZification of all entertainment shows/websites wouldn't be happening. But since I read both this and the original story, guess I'm just as guilty as anyone.:|

Who is to blame?

The same moronic general public that also thinks Paris "Can I get my ankles any further apart" Hilton, Britney "No really, it was a frosted donut" Spears and Lindsey "Thats mouthwash on my breath" Lohan is news.

I live in CA near the studios, and if JLH doesn't live here, she's here a lot because ABC Studios produces Ghost Whisperer, I think.

I saw her the Sunday after Thanksgiving at a restaurant having brunch with friends (and her fiancé? probably - we didn't pry). She is tiny - she is petite height-wise, but she is slim and trim and tiny! I thought she looked fabulous with minimal makeup and casual clothes, and I would KILL to enjoy Sunday brunch and be that tiny.

Perhaps we should have the paparazzo who took her photo take one of himself/herself in a bikini suit, and see if it stands up to 'perfection' scrutiny, because from 10-12 feet away, JLH looks well, not sick and emaciated, nor fat in the least.

JLH is a beautiful woman and I am glad that she is happy with herself. I think that she only mentioned that she is a size 2 because she had been called fat and she wanted to show that people are crazy if they think someone that size is fat.

I remember reading stories about Jennifer Lopez where they called her full-figured (code word for "fat") because she was a size 6. Now they are calling someone who is a size 2 fat. When is the insanity going to stop? This past year 2 models died from starving themselves so they could be skin and bones for their jobs. There are a small number of women who are naturally skin and bones skinny. But most women have curves.

It is time that the magazines, movies and television shows stop forcing actresses and models to starve themselves, and start showing real women of all sizes. Grey's Anatomy is not one of my favorite shows, but I do applaud the fact that they have women of all sizes, shapes and colors.

Best idea I've heard yet from this misogynistic mess. Thanks betsy!
