Chris Carter: X-Files 2 Is a Stand-alone Film
X-Files courtesy 20th Century Fox
Apparently, the truth is still out there. Which would explain why The X-Files will be back out there July 25, when the second movie version of the series hits theaters. Plot details are more closely guarded than an alien autopsy, but creator Chris Carter does have a few clues to offer those eager X-Files fans who have been waiting for more since the Fox show ended in 2002. "This is really a continuation of the series, imagining how the characters' lives have evolved," explains Carter, who cowrote and is directing the movie. "It's a stand-alone story that owes everything to the series, but not the mythology of the series. What we'll be dealing with is government-based as far as the conspiracy goes, but expect this not to be a revisitation [of the show's convoluted conspiracy]."
FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) will still be at the center of the story, and Studio 60's Amanda Peet and rapper Xzibit have been added to the cast as fellow agents. "This is really a continuation of the series, imagining how the characters' lives have evolved," Carter explains. But are there any clues as to what creepy case they'll all be trying to crack? "I'm hoping to keep this movie like a Christmas present," he says, laughing. "It can't be opened until the day arrives." — Craig Tomashoff

I am so excited to see Mulder and Scully back together again. Hopefully Chris Carter can redeem himself from the mess that was season 8 & 9 of the X Files. I can't wait for July 25 to be here.

This will be the best birthday present!! I'm really excited.
Although I kind of wish they could still be in the FBI, I'm interested in finding what's up now.

c0rrine, they ARE still FBI agents in this movie, they just won't be dealing with the overriding arc of the mythology in the series.
And in case I forget by July (cuz like, I'm a guy)... HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

Thank goodness it's stand-alone - the X-Files arc bored me to tears. I loved the individual episodes that explored some bizzare mystery, but stopped watching the episodes that dealt with the arc somewhere during the whole black oil thing.
Chris Carter made a good show, but he could use some lessons from Joss Whedon on how to do an arc.

I am almost done watching (re-watching) most of the 9 seasons of X-Files (still have half a season to go), so this news is very exciting. I, too, preferred the stand-alone episodes to the mythology episodes. When I was actually watching the show when it first aired, I thought it was because I watched too sporadically and was missing information, but after watching them back to back, it turns out that wasn't the case; I just prefer the stand-alones.
I can't wait.

Meredith, you have crytsallized my feelings exactly!
I have to admit, I was never the greatest X-Files fan. I liked it, but I was mostly humoring a buddy of mine who insisted I watch them (just as I am dragging him, kicking through season 7 of Buffy these days).
At the time, I enjoyed the mythology of the series, but when it fizzled, so did any interest in the series as a whole. Nowadays, I appreciate the standalones more. I don't know whether it's that Chris Carter bailed on the mythology or Fox bailed on Carter, but it all fell apart. It's a shame network programmers don't have more "vision", because too many shows have been shark-jumpable. And who knows? TV series may be the Rembrandts and Van Goghs of tomorrow.
(There you go, mindless philistines! I give you the easiest straight-line of 2008 so far! Have at it!)

I'm so glad the X-Files is back, I really missed the show and am at least glad to have it back in some form.

I was a HUGE X-files fan!!! I am very excited this movie is coming out but will be extremely disappointed if only Mulder and Scully are back. I love the Lone Gunman, Skinner, and I must be the only one who liked Agent Doggett. I hope at least some of these characters are a small focus in the film. Oh and Mulder taping the X to his window while watching some hot porn and spitt'n those sunflower seeds!!!! 2 favorite episodes: Arcadia and Small Potatoes. Ahh...good times...good times!!!!

Well, sorin, The Lone Gunmen are "dead" and there's no sign of them (or Mitch/Skiner) on imdb.com, so you'd better prepare yourself for disappointment. However, a reunion of DD, GA and Chris Carter are enough for me (although I DO like that earlier invocation of another name...Joss Whedon...I wonder what HE'D do with the franchise! The mind reels!)

See...funny how different people work. I preferred the mythology over the standalones, which bored me for the most part. But, I think it's a little unfair to compare contemporary serial genre shows that use mythology arcs because current genre TV has learned and evolved from shows like "X-Files" and "Twin Peaks" and predecessors.
But, it makes a whole lot of sense to make it a standalone to try to wrangle in as a large an audience as possible for a show that will have been over for six years.
Even if it isn't a mythology story, I still look forward to revisiting this world and hope they don't ignore the past too much.
