In case you've been wondering when you were going to get to hear "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves" performed live, this story is for you! Cher will be taking over for Celine Dion at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, according to the AP. She'll share an alternating headlining spot with Elton John and Bette Midler. "I started in Vegas at Caesars, so I've come full circle," she said. "I'm back, and I plan to give my fans the best experience yet. I think everybody knows I only do things in a big way." The flamboyant star, who has won Oscar, Emmy and Grammy awards and has sold more than 100 million albums, will perform 200 shows over her three-year engagement starting on May 6. (And yes, Bob Mackie is designing the costumes.) — Mickey O'Connor

I guess "farewell" concerts are meaningless, then.

I don't mind Cher going back on her word, I suppose. She's talented and entertaining...but remember that year where Celine said she was going to go away, and she never really did? That was hell! It seemed like three months of stories about her leaving, six months of stories about her being gone, and three months of stories about her coming back. And all the while, folks like me would point at the screen and whimper, "...but you promised..."!

I guess she's gotta pay for all the collagen in her lips somehow.

There seem to be a lot of entertainers coming out of retirement--Garth Brooks, Cher, New Kids on the Block... :-p :-D

FYI... Cher has stated that she was "Retiring from touring" not Entertaining.
Las Vegas is one stage, one city. She will be flying in from her Malibu home.
She is the Diva of all divas, so she can do whatever she wants!

I just hope that Celine will adhere to the old "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" rule.

I feel the same way about Garth Brooks TvGord. I remember the pre-porcelain Cher. How sexy she was with her imperfect teeth and natural nose and body. I bet she would have aged wonderfully with great character and eternal sexiness. Too bad we'll never know. When she has the material she's capable of great performance but I don't know what the heck she sees when she looks in the mirror. Whatever it is it's not an improvement.

I don't know if it's a coincidence or what but it seems that so many of the ones that make such a big deal about retiring are ones that I wish would go away anyway.

These bogus retirements are one reason I admire the Rolling Stones who eschew such foolish and hasty decisions. People criticize them for continuing to tour, criticism that people their age and older-Cher, Bette Midler, Streisand, Elton John-are spared for some reason. But the Stones keep playing as long people come to see them and probably will continue to do so as long as they can still play no matter how their audiences may dwindle.

Playing music is what they do and I admire them for ignoring, in their sixties, the knocks coming from younger generations the same way that in their youth they they ignored the jabs coming from older folks. When asked if they do it for the money Mick Jagger said the money was nice but they also do it for "all the beer you can drink and the chicks down front". That, my friends, is rock and roll and it will never die. Or retire.
