CBS Is Sweet on Cane; CW Embraces Aliens

Just as NBC has shown some love to four of its new series, CBS has ordered four more scripts for Cane, even though the Jimmy Smits serial (like the Peacock's Life and Journeyman) has had trouble mustering an eye-opening audience.

Meanwhile, the CW — which was the first network to give a full-season order to a new show (Gossip Girl) — has ordered three more scripts for Aliens in America. Thank Allah!

I am surprised by all the script orders. I thought for sure that we were going to be receiving the opposite news about Cane. How can CBS cancel Smith after three episodes but possibly give Cane a full season. Then again, I think these orders have more to do with the imminent strike. Plus, I think The Nine got an extra order last year before it was cancelled.

Yep, I'm with you there.

Fantastic news about Aliens--one of the best new shows of the year!

I only wish it was on one of the big 4 networks so it would get a wider audience, although then maybe it wouldn't have had the additional ep. pickups.

If the new scripts for Cane involve storylines that feature both Frank (Nestor Carbonell) & Henry (Eddie Matos) Duque getting brains and becoming interesting characters, I'm in!

The full season order for TLMS (The Leighton Meester Show -- I won't call it GG) is great news. The three-scripts order for AiA IMO *isn't* good news for that show. It's a lukewarm (pun not intended) invoice at best. Firefly got the three-script order, too, and those episodes were filmed but not aired and only first seen in the DVD set. A three-script order means "we see a glimmer of hope in what you've done so far, but you're basically dead if you can't work out the major problems and have the show gel into what it should be by the end of those three episodes."

IF the show gets an addition order for 6 more episodes, or, in essence, the rest of the back nine, that's when you've got the actual good news, IMO.

I love Cane! I would be terribly upset to see it go! It's a modern day Dallas in my opinion! CBS would be wise to keep it!
