Are CBS News and CNN Getting Together?

CBS News and CNN have reportedly revived discussions about sharing some of their newsgathering operations.

CBS, which lags in third place in the ratings with Evening News with Katie Couric and The Early Show, would likely look to the deal as a way to save costs. CNN's product, in turn, would get broader exposure over the broadcast network.

CNN medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta already does occasional reports for CBS News broadcasts, and Anderson Cooper is a contributor to 60 Minutes. Before CBS hired Couric, there were very informal discussions about CNN producing CBS Evening News with Cooper as anchor. Lately there has been chatter from TV news industry insiders that Couric could eventually leave Evening News for Larry King's prime-time slot on CNN. A CBS-CNN partnership would certainly pave the way for that transition.

CNN has held numerous talks over the years about partnering with a broadcast network, to no avail. The New York Times reported Monday night that CBS and CNN had recently embarked on talks again, but insiders at both networks said there was no sense that any kind of deal is imminent.

CNN has not commented on the report, but CBS issued a statement on Tuesday, saying, "We are extremely satisfied with and proud of our newsgathering operation. No outside arrangement is being negotiated." — Stephen Battaglio

We watched "Good Night and Good Luck" last night. What would Fred Friendly and Edward R.Murrow make of this?

What would Fred Friendly and Edward R.Murrow make of this?

That the average American TV viewer has become a 2 dimensional, superficial, vacuous creature that only cares about what kind of trouble befalls the Star of the Moment and who are the next wannabe celebs to be paraded before them in High Definition. That if they can't have their news delivered with a healthy dose of bias, why bother?

It's almost enough to make a viewer miss the days of 3 snowy channels, and crossing the room to twist the vise-grips that took the place of the broken nob. Almost.

I would LOVE to see and Anderson Cooper CBS Evening News. He might very well increase their ratings, very possibly to the number one spot.
