CBS Evening News Ratings Hit All-time Low

For the second consecutive week, ratings for the CBS Evening News have reached a record low. TVNewser.com reports that the broadcast averaged 5.3 million total viewers, and just over 1.5 million in the 25-54 demo — an all-time low.

The week prior, the broadcast, anchored by Katie Couric, attracted 5.39 million viewers and 1.69 million adults 25-54.

They are the lowest numbers recorded for the program since Nielsen began tracking network evening newscast ratings during the 1987-88 season. — J.R. Whalen

Come on, everybody, we have to start watching Katie! You know how insufferably smug Dan Rather is going to be if Couric tanks! :_|

During Katie's first newscast, she showed the first public picture of baby Suri Cruise. Seriuously, someone thought that was a smart move?

For useless fluff, I watch The Insider and The Soup - not CBS News.

I stopped watching at that point. Now I get my news from NBC.

I honestly think we would all get better news if there were no ratings. It is suppose to be about the news and not who is the prettiest anchor or who can make the most dramatic delivery.

I would have a lot more respect for CBS or any news program that said the heck with rating, we're just going to give the news.

Network News ?!

The problem isn't so much Katie Couric as it is the continuing viability of network news. It's a friggin dinosaur ! The network news was relevant from the dawn of television but has been rendered wholly irrelevant with the advent of 24hr cable news and the Internet.

They note the age 25-54 demographic as if ! There's no one under the age of 45 watching network news anymore, are you kidding me ?! Network news needs to be killed and its content rolled into the local affiliates at the top of the hour. I'd much rather watch yet another syndicated sitcom in that time slot anyway.
