Fall TV: Moonlight Has Drawn its Last Blood

It's the news no one here wanted to report, but alas, it must be shared. CBS — which earlier today renewed to Old Christine, How I Met Your Mother and The Unit — has opted not to bring back Moonlight for a second season.

Though the vampire-detective drama boasted a fantastically passionate and wonderfully generous (they held a blood drive, people!) fan base, the buzz is that the Eye simply was not happy with Moonlight's retention of its Ghost Whisperer lead-in. At last tally, Mick & Co. were letting slip some 13 percent of Melinda's audience.

For what little it is worth, I'm on a mission to secure for fans some parting words of appreciation from the cult hit's producers. (Alas, Alex himself is currently on holiday.) — MWM

mackattack, I was coming here to post the exact same thing, right down to the "uh-oh"!

I liked the show, but I know there are people who LOVED it, and I feel awful for them. Especially those who donated blood for the cause. At least you can take some solace in the FACT that you may have saved some lives. :)

This is very bad news. First New Amsterdam, now this. Is this show way too expensive for the CW? It seems to me that it would make a great addition to it's line-up.

I didn't watch it, but I totally get how angry people will be. I feel the same about Men in Trees. Also Womens Murder Club, who I thought had a new writing staff to save it. grrrrrrrrr

Yeah, really, this place is going to go crazy any second now.

And I just went to mention that I find it completely hysterical that the shows Friday Night Lights went up against on Fridays (Moonlight, Woman's Murder Club) have both been cancelled, even though their ratings were better. CW got rid of Smackdown as well (even though it's going somewhere else). FNL wins again!

Sorry, this show had its moments, but it was mostly lame and unoriginal. I found the leads somewhat boring and uninteresting. Now if there was a show about Josef (Jason Dohring's character), THAT would have been interesting. I hope he gets a good lead somewhere.

This is total bs!!! How could Moonlight win the 2008 People's Choice Award for best new drama and CBS is saying that it was losing viewers each week?!?!?! I used to watch The Unit but lost interest after the first season. You mean to tell me that Unit is better than ML?!?!? Come on. That's ridiculous. CBS is making a huge mistake by not renewing ML. I can only pray that it will be picked up by another network.

That's really disappointing. I liked the show a lot, and really needed a second season. Not only am I mourning the loss of the MickBeth storyline, but Jason Dohring's Josef and David Blue's Logan. This year was the first time that I saw an episode of GW, as I was waiting for Moonlight to start. At least I don't have to watch that show again. Come to think of it, since Jericho ended, Moonlight was the only CBS show that I watched.

I guess that the repeated shake-ups were too much for the show, and the writers' strike and the subsequent downturn in viewer numbers didn't help either, I expect. All I can say is that there had better be significant sparkage in the finale on Friday, because we fans want some romance and passion...especially since it's our last chance. Sheesh, I get more disheartened the longer I post, so I'm stopping now.

CBS said goodbye to Moonlight; now I'll say goodbye and good riddance to CBS.

Too bad it wasn't on NBC, ABC, FOX or CW, all of which are more sci-fi/fantasy friendly these days and likely would have renewed it for a second season.

Good Grief! Has CBS even noticed the passionate fan base this show has developed, despite the interrupted season? Surely CBS has noticed that Moonlight episodes are among the top SF&F TV show downloads on iTunes?

I'll miss my weekly fix of Mick and Beth /Alex and Sophia, but I won't miss tuning into CBS one bit.

Unbelievable. CBS does it yet again. They put on a new show, I invest my time in it and then they cancel it. What desire does a person have these days to try anything new on TV, when most of it gets cancelled before it even gains momentum? Think Jericho, Caine and now Moonlight. I have had it with the Eye network and I will no longer watch anything new they have to offer (until it's in it's 2nd or 3rd season and it seems worth my time). I've had enough.

I can't even believe this. I'm in total shock! I thought that Moonlight was a lock for next season.
I'm so depressed with the cancellation of New Amsterdam and now Moonlight.
Thank God Supernatural is still on, but I'm still going to feel so deprived next season.
CBS are idiots for cancelling this, and they're double-idiots if they don't give Alex O'Loughlin another series of his own to front right away.
(Give Jason Dohring a series too.)

Come on CW! It's time for you 2 pick this show up & pair it w/ Reaper! I think it would make a heck of a Sunday night or maybe even a good Friday!

Moonlight is one the rare and refreshing shows on television. CBS should take into considering that it was on the "death slot" Friday nights. It has been #1 winning that time slot since it was returned from 3-month hiatus.

How many comedies does CBS need? Why can't they at least put Moonlight as a mid-season pick up?

I am devastated right now. CBS, you have just lost a viewer in me!!
