CBS Boss Calls Couric Replacement Talk "Insulting"

Offering Katie Couric some much-needed support in the wake of a New York Magazine profile that got tongues wagging about the Evening News anchor's days being numbered, CBS News president Sean McManus said he plans to see Couric fronting the newscast into 2010. "She has a five-year contract with CBS to anchor the evening news," McManus tells the Associated Press. "All of us, including Katie, expect her to be anchoring the evening news in her fifth year."

McManus takes issue with news-biz bloggers who went so far as to solicit reader votes on who should replace Couric in the event she is ousted, calling such speculation-for-sport "absurd" and "insulting." (Whew, glad I stopped short of posting that particular poll!)

I agree. And although I believe it's a popular sport to slam Moonves, I agree with a lot of things he does, as well!

Let Katie settle into the job a little bit. Let's be real, here. She is infinitely better than the embarrassment that was Dan Rather (who rode his coattails on a couple of lucky breaks FOR DECADES)!

The truth is (and I've said it before) is that hardly anyone bothers to tune into the 6:30 news anymore. Frankly, I can't believe anyone even pays attention to it anymore. But to lay the demise of this tired, old genre at HER feet is patently unfair.

I think even Walter (and aren't we--as a society--still lucky ti have HIM around) would say the "evening news" is now irrelevant. No disrespect to Bri, Chuck and Katie, but when was the last time ANY of us actually tuned in to watch their broadcasts. I get my news off the internet in the morning and at night. Those times in between are tied up with other distractions (family, sometimes friends and co-workers). I'm not saying anything revolutionary here. Our world isn't just changing. It HAS CHANGED!

...maybe Rosie could host the evening news, and Katie could do The Price is Right (after she's done kicking Julie Chen's behind)...

Being a news/public affairs geek, I watch the PBS Newshour daily and, depending on my interest in the longer segments, dip into ABC & CBS newscasts. Very rarely watch NBC news. Then after the Newshour, I sample Wolf Blitzer and Shepard Smith (unless, shh!, there's some guilty pleasure celebrity news, in which case I flip to E! News) until Jeopardy! comes on.

Sad to say, it isn't the evening news I've given up so much as the Sunday morning chat shows that I've given up. Never watched Bob Shieffer, but increasingly Tim Russert has annoyed me to the point he seems to think he's more important than his guests, and I find Stephanopoulos a poor substitute for Sam & Cokie, or even Brinkley (yes, I was a Sunday morning news junkie in middle school).

She should have stayed on the Today show, she doesn't fit on this type of broadcast. She's out of her league.

I agree with TV Gord...does anybody really watch the 6:30 news anymore? If I want news, I go to the internet or channel surf between CNN and MSNBC for the fastest, most up-to-date news; otherwise I watch my local news.

One thing that really bugs me, though, is the way we've begun to take "opinion polls" on every little subject. It's to the point of overkill, if you ask me. What, if enough people say so in an opinion poll, Katie will have to go?? If we continue down this current path of instant opinion, I'm sure we'll self-destruct!

I completely agree, TV Gord. Although I count myself as something of a news junkie, there often isn't time right at 6:30 to sit down and watch Katie, Brian, Chuck or anybody. It's not the anchor, but the events in my life that dictate how I get the news.

:(I have to agree, I like Katie but I liked her on the Today show...I think that she is way out of her league here, and with so many families that have both parents working, who the heck has the time to watch the evening news anyway..I don't. I did give her a shot once or twice, but she could not keep my attention. Maybe she should join "The View" and take Meredith's place..would be ironic you must say. ?<img border=">
