James Marsters has been cast as the heavy in Twentieth Century Fox's live-action adaptation of the Japanese manga Dragonball, which is apparently about as popular over there as Harry Potter is, um, everywhere. Justin Chatwin — aka Tom Cruise's sulky son in War of the Worlds — has been tapped to play the good-guy lead, and X Files alum James Wong will direct the pic, which has been given a tentative release date of Aug. 15.

In related news, Marsters has just been signed to appear at every Comic-Con from now until doomsday. — Ben Katner

I thought you were going to say something about him getting a part on Joss' Dollhouse. Oh well!

As long as James is gracing the world with his killer acting abilities, all is well. Thanks Ben

This is awesome news on so many levels:

1. The Dragonball live-action movie may actually finally happen.

2. James Marsters is involved.

Well, ok, maybe it's just awesome news on two levels. But still. ;)

I know nothing about Dragonball, but I will definitely be seeing this movie when it comes out. James Marsters is one of the best, most versatile actors today. Not to mention the fact that he is SMOKIN HOT!!!!:-p

I didn't think Wong was allowed to work without Morgan? "Morgan/Wong" is a unit.

I'm always glad to see him back on TV, but I seriously thinks he needs to explore his options beyond the realm of SciFi. He runs the risk of being the next Walter Koenig.

I remember seeing him on Politically Incorrect, and he's a very smart guy. He needs to make smarter choices, career-wise. I know it's not totally up to him, but he could do anything, if he aims a little outside his comfort zone.

A live-action version of Dragonball? Is that bile in my mouth I'm tasting?

Yay!
That's one of the shows I remember watching when I was a kid. I still have the theme song stuck in my head. And almost eveybody my age (24) watched the show when they were kids. It's really popular, at least where I live (the Basque Country, in Spain).
And for the record, I'm not a manga fan. But that show rocked!
I remember the kamehameha!
ah... good times...

So who exactly is James Marsters playing? There are a lot of characters in that show. And there's more than one bad guy.

Oh! And I suggest little Shane Botwin (Alexander Gould) for the role of Gohan (Goku's son), if they get there in the film.

Well, I guess that none of you Americans know about the show.
But I know it has aired there, because while I was there the summer of 2000 I was flipping through channels and I saw it. I think it was a digital channel though.

Anyway, I've been waiting for this movie to be made for a long time. I think the first time I remember reading about rumours was like 10 years ago, or maybe more.

And if they do it well, there are going to be some pretty kick-ass fights.
Can't wait.

tamara, the show was actually pretty popular in the U.S. Though, the English dub was pretty bad. They changed all the music and made a lot of changes to the plot. I'm trying to buy all the DVDs to see the original Japanese version, but damn, it gets to be expensive.

Anyway, James Marsters might make a good Piccolo. But, casting a Canadian as Goku? That's just ridiculous. Goku is supposed to be asian.

Come on, Master Moron, open your mind a little. Don't you remember Tony Danza's tour de force as a Japanese man on a 1983 episode of The Love Boat! And don't leave out Rosie O'Donnell's unforgettable portrayal on The View last year! And remember, Sandra Oh is Canadian. She gets away with playing an Asian every week on Grey's Anatomy! (Now THAT's acting!)

Who the heck is he going to play? I don't actively watch DB like I used to but I'm very curious.

As far as the cons go, if he's not going to be personalizing autographs why bother?

Yeah, I'm still a bit bitter about DC.

So damn true!! lol ;)

Good for him. I'm so glad James keeps getting work, especially since his WoT apperance so far hasn't turned out to be much. Maybe the team should search for the elusive Det. Mars since he's been missing for like 4 weeks now.
