« Today's News: Our Take
Buffy Creator Dumps Wonder Woman
It's a sad, sad day for fanboys everywhere. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Buffy and Angel creator Joss Whedon has bailed on Warner Bros. Pictures' Wonder Woman feature. "I had a take on the film that, well, nobody liked," he wrote on www.whedonesque.com. "[The suits and I] just saw different movies.... nonsympatico. It happens all the time." Bah! At this rate, when that pic finally gets made, Lauren Graham's gonna be too, er, mature to play the (other) part she was born to play. (Oh, and at least one Today's News reader owes Matt Mitovich an apology.) Next up for Whedon is the thriller Goners, which he's directing for Universal.
In other comic-book/feature news, WB Pictures has signed Night at the Museum director Shawn Levy to take over its adaptation of The Flash, which is hardly as good as Wonder Woman, but hey, it's something.
Monday's Today's News was written by Ben Katner.

Given the near assurance that anything Joss touches is gold, it worries me that the studio didn't like his vision. It suggests to me that maybe they're just looking to throw some crap on screen and hope it rides on the coattails of the superhero trend.

While I think that Joss' previous works have been good, I wouldn't go so far as to say anything he touches is gold. From what little that was leaked about the script involving Wonder Woman's daughter, I'm not sure I am sad about the news. This times oddly with the news about a Wonder Woman script Warner Brothers bought that hit at the end of last week. Maybe someone else nailed it when Joss didn't.

I don't put much faith in reports that leak onto the internet. So often they are misinformation or early thoughts. It seems like he would have been a good match to the project. Really Buffy was a very Wonder Woman type character. I guess I could be wrong, I haven't watched many Buffy episodes.

I always thought the Joss Whedon/Wonder Woman match-up was too good to be true. So, I guess it was.
I hope that whoever they get to step in does it justice. I would hate for Wonder Woman to be reduced to Catwoman or Elektra type crap.

You know, I'm a little bummed because I do love everything Whedon, but Wonder Woman always bored me. I just don't find her or her stores/villains/romances as interesting as Batman, Superman, Spiderman, Black Canary, or Batgirl to name a few. I like comics and I'm a female in my early 20s. If I'm not sold on the film, I don't know who would be. The only interest I saw for this movie was who would play the part--not which story or characters would be used.

Joss must be relieved. Now he can work on his own projects instead of wasting time on this doomed albatross. Though if anyone could have made a female superhero finally work on film it's him. It's also too bad about Shawn Levy (?!) replacing David Goyer, who had some really neat ideas about the Speedster involving Einsteinian relativity.
Screw WB, now how about a direct to video Spike movie? James Marsters isn't getting any younger. Neither is Tony Head. Ripper, anyone?

Darn it!
Say it ain't so, Ben Katner. I was so looking forward to any big screen Wonder Woman film, let alone a WW flick by the talented Joss Whedon.
WW (as played by Lynda Carter) ranks high on my list of childhood idols. Yeah, I'm not ashamed to admit that I was one of those gay kids you'd catch twirling round and round in the boys' bathroom, transforming from Ms. Diana Prince into Wonder Woman. And, of course, any jump rope I could get a hold of was instantly used as "my magic lasso that makes the liars tell the truth."
We've had so much fun speculating on who should don those satin tights over the years, haven't we? (Nadia Bjorlin! Lauren Graham! Charisma Carpenter!) Such a shame it all comes to naught.

Honestly, I saw this coming. Not surprised. At this point, don’t really care. Female superhero pics haven’t really done well. And I have to say that The Flash is awesome and has much more character than Wonder Woman. As for Shawn Levy writing it, well, not to knock Night at the Museum but the fact that that is his biggest writing credit to date doesn’t inspire much confidence in me. The only hero left of the Big DC 5 is Green Lantern and I’m sure there will be as much argument over which Green Lantern (my guess either Hal Jordan or John Stewart if they could get Will Smith) they will use as who will direct.

The only hero left of the Big DC 5 is Green Lantern... - olomaya
A few years ago, some rumors surfaced that Jack Black was planning a Green Lantern movie. Thankfully, nothing more was ever heard of that.
I think a great movie could be made of Green Lantern -- just not with Jack Black.
Of course, I'm biased. As a DC fan from the '70s, I think great movies could be made with each of these characters -- Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, Aquaman, Black Canary, The Atom -- if they pick the right writer-director combination.
Even Elongated Man.

Love Lauren, but not as WW.
Hopefully someone will do justice to WW in a movie. If not, I'd rather a film wasn't made. I've got the DVDs of the TV series.

I don't know if I could see Black Canary holding her own movie. Maybe a Birds of Prey movie but after the debacle that was the show, I'm a bit skittish.
I'd love to see a Batgirl 2.0 movie with Zhang Ziyi, but it'd be hard to do it without avoiding the whole lack of Batman thing.

Losing Josh is a huge mistake for WW. Only thing worse would be if they get someone like Renny Harlin to direct.

I really liked Birds of Prey. It sucked that people would not support it.

Oh, and at least one Today's News reader owes Matt Mitovich an apology.
OK, my curiosity has finally gotten the better of me. Who does Ben Katner think owes Matt Mitovich an apology? Me? If so, why? Looking back at what I posted, I don't think I see anything that I need to apologize for. But if I'm missing something, please, someone let me know.
