Brothers' Rob Lowe Signs On for Second Term

"The senator" has ABC's vote — or perhaps vice versa. Rob Lowe will continue on with the just-renewed Brothers & Sisters next season, and as a full-fledged cast member, Variety reports. Lowe first guested as Calista Flockhart's eventual love interest last November, then stayed on as a "special guest star" (which to me always reads as, "Good agent, better money").

My question: If Lowe's senator is elected president, does Martin Sheen come on as his deputy communications director? Is that how it works?

I think he has to go out to California to get Josh Lyman to be his Deputy Chief of Staff actually.

I prefer the idea of a single Calista, but I guess that relives too much of Ally McBeal so a stable relationship would be a more refreshing storyline for her.

I guess they have Emily VanCamp's Rebecca to play the "dating" sister, and I look forward to whatever cute boys they bring on for her!

I'm a big Brothers & Sisters fan, but this news doesn't thrill me.

I think Lowe has been a dud, and the bland political story just isn't getting traction.

I agree with breakdown above -- I think it would be better storywise for Kitty to be single for a while. (In my opinion, she and Lowe have absolutely zero chemistry.)

And before people brand me a Lowe hater, I'm not -- I've liked him in lots of things. He's just not working on this show.

Apparently the ratings saw an uptick when Lowe joined the show, so they're eager to keep him around.

Personally, I agree with those who don't think he and Calista have any chemistry and think their romance is boring. I'd also much rather see her single and dating around for a while. Tommy and Sarah are both married, so it's not like they don't have any stable relationships on the show.

But it's funny that the show's creator has talked about how great their chemistry is and that ABC promoed their kiss as the one America was waiting for since I don't really know anyone who likes their pairing.

Goodness me, what negative posts! Count me as one who is thrilled to see that Rob will be in Season 2, and I think he and Calista are great together. He adds class, style and humour to the show.

It is also wonderful to have him back on TV regularly (I can't say every week, given the way ABC messes around with the scheduling).

I think her chemistry with Josh Hopkins was far more palpable. They also had tension with their differing political views, which made their hookup hot. But to each his/her own. I have faith in Greg Berlanti and the rest of the crew.

The only reason I enjoy this bit of news is because by Rob Lowe sticking around, it probably improves Kevin's chances of getting it on with the Senator's hot brother for a while, which seems like a fairly pumped up plot development-- siblings dating and all that.

Rob Lowe is not the problem. Calista Flockhart is ghastly, cannot act, and is the weakest link in this incredible ensemble of actors. Get rid of her and replace her with someone classy and non-anorexic looking and we'll all be better off. Very many more close-ups of her face and I may stop watching anyway.

Chappy and somethingreal81: Couldn't Agree More. I like Rob Lowe but he and Calista Flockhart have NO chemistry. Any spark that is there is all him, whenever he kisses her, she just stands there like a limp fish, not moving her lips. It's creepy to watch. And I don't understand why he's even in California and considering running for president. How does that work in reality? I liked her better with her male cohost for her show. They had tons of chemistry and I got less of an Ally McBeal vibe whenever she did scenes with him. I don't like this romance at all and I don't like the fact that his oh-so convenient (so he can still stay perfect in the eyes of liberal-leaning viewers even though he is against gay marriage) gay brother will hook up with Kevin. I almost barfed the first time he revealed he had a gay brother. "Oh you have a gay brother? I have a gay brother too? Let's all have gay brothers!" I'm a Scotty fan and will remain that way.

Anyway, bitch, bitch, wah, wah, I still love the show.

Uh, no. That's not how it works. Dear God.

While it's true Lowe and Flockhart have no chemistry (for which I blame Flockhart, who's never had chemistry with anyone), it doesn't mean Lowe isn't a welcome addition to the show. He's a great actor with excellent comic timing, already has developed a very watchable rapport with Sally Field and has had some nice scenes with some of the other Walker family members as well.

I do think the writers have painted themselves into a corner with him running for president - I don't see how they could possibly have him win, since the scope of this show wouldn't be able to handle dealing with all that. (unless they did it in a very cheesy, entirely offscreen way)

I'm with ya, there. For the life of me, I don't know why they haven't done more with Scotty.

Unless the comments on the message boards are completely unrepresentative of the audience as a whole -- which is entirely possible -- Scotty is extremely popular with viewers.

I don't know if Luke MacFarlane (Scotty) doesn't want to commit to a larger role or if he and Matthew Rhys (Kevin) don't get along or what.

It's kind of a mystery.

That said, I think the story with the Senator's gay brother might be interesting.

Ya know, I was never an Ally McBeal fan and CF is not by any means my favorite part of this amazing cast, but I've really enjoyed the "chemistry" between she and RL. And I actually prefer her in a relationship precisely because I don't think her acting is that strong and a consistent scene partner can minimize that problem (or exacerbate it I know!). I think RL is strong, so in this case I think it helps.

Oh, and in another probably unpopular opinion :), I actually did not like Scotty. That was a situation where I didn't feel a lot of chemistry between he and Kevin. I've liked the Jason Lewis character storyline despite the fact that you just knew it was a train wreck waiting to happen.

I love this show!!!!!!!!!!

Well I was a big Ally McBeal fan and an even bigger Brothers and Sisters fan but I agree with nolan34, the problem isn't with Rob, it's Calista. I don't have as much of a problem with her as some of you gowill - deep breaths....but I don't think she's capable of having chemistry with ANYBODY (I can't help but think of her with Harrison Ford whenever's she's in a love scene yukkkkkk) although I did enjoy her relationship with the tv show guy.

That being said, we seem to be making the assumption that because RL is staying, the Senator and Kitty will be in a relationship. It's possible that they'll just have a working relationship.

As for Scotty, I thought it was good for Kevin's growth to be with him, but I think any healthy relationship will be good for Kevin's growth.

I didn't specifically like the character Scotty.
