I'm having trouble envisioning a Brokeback starring two burly, barrel-chested opera guys. It'd be as if Randy Quaid had instead landed a lead.

(This is where an opera buff enlightens me that some male singers are in fact lean and mean and Gyllenhall-esque.)

I don't know if I qualify as an opera "buff", but I have attended several productions at New York City Opera over the past few years and can confirm that there are now lead male and female opera singers in all sizes, ranging from thin to hefty. They don't all look like Pavarotti.

An opera? Not a Broadway musical?
