How I Met Your Fender: Spears in Minor Car Accident

Perhaps because her mind was elsewhere as she contemplated the significance of Neil Patrick Harris' recent comments, Britney Spears was involved in a minor car accident Saturday night on Los Angeles' northbound 405.

Police reports say that Spears, traveling in stop-and-go traffic, did not see a Nissan (it's always some poor Nissan, isn't it?) directly in front of her as it came to a full stop. Spears attempted to brake in time but instead her Mercedes collided with the rear of the Nissan, which in turn hit another car.

No injuries were reported, and no tickets were handed out. — MWM

How in the name of everything normal, sacred, or logical can it be unclear as to whether or not Britney was driving? Spin doctors getting another big check this week?

I have been driving longer than Britney Spears has been alive, and she has already had more collisions that I have ever had! She really needs to get herself a driver. Until she and her tartlette pals do, I think I'll keep my family out of the Thirty Mile Zone!:_|

Ditto, Gord. You and I are part of the same club! We must not party hard enough. — MWM

IzzyBeth: not sure where you see that it's "unclear" if Britster was driving. Unless the above news-blurb was edited, it makes no indication that there was any confusion. An article I read on another site said that Britney was "behind the wheel."

What I don't understand is, why weren't any tickets issued??? She clearly wasn't paying attention, or was following too closely, or both. I'm pretty sure I (and most other people) would've walked away from that incident with some paperwork and a strain on my wallet!!

Usually when someone hits a car from behind they are issued a ticket for following too closely. That will usually happen when police are called even if you just bumped someone. Clearly she hit the car hard enough to push it into another car. I guess that law is only for people who are not celebrities.

I can't believe people are nit picking Britney on a fender bender, like nobody has ever had one. Please, I've had a few and didn't receive tickets for all of them, so there. This isn't really news. People didn't gripe this much when Moesha had her accident, and that was terrible.

I'm not a fan of Britney's, but anyone who has driven in L.A. knows this could easily happen to them. The fact that there wasn't any damage shows she was trying to stop. No damage should equal no ticket.

BTW - If it wasn't her, would anyone be saying she should get a ticket, or anything else for that matter?

ladyofthelake, Brandy got a little more sympathy from people because she didn't have a history of misdeeds behind the wheel, the way Britney does.

TV Gord, ya Britney has had minor stuff, her misdeeds, with all the people jumping on the hood of her car while she's driving to take a picture, but she hasn't harmed anyone while driving, nobody has died. Fender benders happen, it's not a crime and to judge Britney all the time for it is dumb, it's only because it's Britney. So just because she's Britney we can rag on her all the time, even for fender benders which alot of people have happen to them. Nobody's saying Brandy (sorry I called her by her tv character name, I got the names mixed up) needs a driver now.

ladyofthelake, Brandy was cleared of all charges against her when there was some question about who caused the crash. There are reports that the victim of the fatal crash actually caused a collision, into which Brandy's vehicle then crashed. Also, there was no evidence of drugs and alcohol in Brandy's system.

Britney, on the other hand, may not have caused any serious injury...yet...but she has a history of substance abuse and reckless driving, AND at least one hit-and-run collision that I can recall off the top of my head.

If you can't see why I (or others) don't treat these two cases the same, I don't know what else to say. (One thing I'm not going to say or suggest is that someone is dumb, simply because we disagree.)

ladyofthelake, She gets into a fender bender every other month. People who are this bad of drivers shouldn't be driving. She might never hurt anyone, but property damage isn't trivial either. You shouldn't be getting into a traffic accident, of any kind, several times a year, that's just ridiculous. A person can drive their entire lives and have fewer accidents than Britney has in a year (as some people here have said).
