Britney Spears guest stars on How I Met Your Mother - Today's News: Our Take

A CBS rep officially confirms for TVGuide.com that which was reported an hour ago on Pink Is the New Blog: Britney Spears is guest-starring on an upcoming episode of How I Met Your Mother. TMZ says it's by no means a long-term gig and that her dad/conservator signed off on it. (Jamie however simply had to draw the line at a similar offer from Welcome to the Captain.) At this time, no details are being made available as to when Spears will tape her appearance or when it will air, but unreliable sources tell me Barney will have cause to coin the new catchphrase, "Thong up!" I hope they don't plan on her being the mother. With how she's going, there's less than a 50/50 chance she'll be around next year. She's the next Anna Nicole, sorry to say.

This totally falls into the when-bad-"actors"-happen-to-good-sitcoms category. At least when she appeared on Will & Grace, that show was already three-seasons stale and her unfunnyness was on par with the rest of the episode. But HIMYM is such an amazing, witty, irreverent and smart sitcom... she probably won't get half the jokes.

When I saw the headline I kept thinking, please don't let it be HIMYM, PLEASE!!! This sucks. HIMYM is a great show and doesn't need any gimmicks like this. Do they really think people will tune in for her anyway? This is so depressing.

no, i think they mean that this casting news trumps alicia silverstone's casting news.

and i think this could be really funny. they've already had mandy moore on the show, playing against type (ie- playing someone like britney/amy winehouse); maybe they'll have britney play against type (ie- playing someone without serious mental issues).

I can't believe anybody who pays attention and a fan of this show could think this is bad news... unless you think that a possible ratings boost for a show that is in very real danger of getting cancelled is a bad thing, this is GREAT news. Even if she freaks out and bungles the whole thing, it's still big press for an underappreciated show (I also think Britney was hilarious on Will & Grace, but I'll admit she was a different girl back then.)

I wish HIMYM would stop with this gimmicky crap, and just stick to the core characters. They are also the show that brought in the Victoria's Secret models, and got no ratings bump. I think Britney is so hated now lots of people will not watch. Personally, The Big Bang Theory is so much better and funnier now that I could really care less.

FROM THE FUTURE: CBS's "How I Met Your Mother" canceled. CBS executive quoted as saying "It's like every viewer turned off their televisions, took out a gun shooting the screen, and then belched their eyes." One viewer was quoted as saying: "Will & Grace abused guest stars like a teenage boy with a naughty magazine."
