« Today's News: Our Take
Will Britney Be Matthew Perry's New TV Friend?

The New York Post's Liz Smith herself admits it's a "long shot," but nonetheless reports that some NBC mucky-mucks believe Britney Spears could be just the ticket to play opposite Matthew Perry in a new sitcom. The tentatively titled Occasional Wife has the Friends alum attached to play a guy who persuades a young, wacky artist to pose as his missus, so as to bolster his career. Assessing Spears' fit for the female lead, one Peacock insider tells Smith, "There's something about her that just connects with the audience.... They want her to succeed now in spite of her adversity." Or at least deliver one more decent music video. Speaking of which....
Today's Brit bits:
• Spears' "Gimme More" video is not debuting today on TRL, says Extra. • Barely 24 hours after a judge odered Spears to submit to random drug and alcohol testing, the pop tart was spied cruising L.A. hot spots Hyde and Winston's — but probably just to snack on buffalo wings, I'm sure. • Appearing on Wednesday's Oprah, Brit's former flame Justin Timberlake said, "To be honest with you, I haven’t spoken to her in years.... I don't know her as well as I did. [But] what I do know is she has a huge heart and she's a great person."

Well, there's another show I won't watch.

That, frankly, would just be awful. Can Brit even act? (I never saw her movie, so I wouldn't know). Just because someone is in the media doesn't mean they need their own tv show.
This makes me feel sad for Matthew Perry.

I'd feel bad for Matthew Perry if there actually was a chance in hell that this rumor were true.
What I think they should do is cast Thomas Haden-Church as the career guy and Debra Messing as the wacky faux-wife. They can call it something like, I dunno, Ed and Tracy.

I am sure Matthew would high tail it out of that show if they actually did hire Britney.

Put Charisma Carpenter on this show. Britney should be the one on Celebrity Apprentice.

Actually, Brit did a few stage productions in New York and shared understudy duties with Natalie Portman for Laura Bell Bundy during a revival of The Demon Seed on Broadway back in the 90's.

To the "Peacock insider" who thinks audiences will connect with Ms. Spears -- put down whatever you're smoking and just step away. Go outside and get some fresh air. Better yet, get the hell out of LA and stop reading "the trades" for a while. Join us here in the real world and you'll realize that Britney Spears in a sitcom with Matthew Perry is just about the worst idea to have ever come down the pike.

ctheslayer--Britney understudied Laura Bell Bundy in an off-Broadway musical called "Ruthless", which is a spoof of "The Bad Seed" among other shows.
Since Lauren Graham has a development deal with NBC, maybe they should pair her up with Matthew Perry for a sitcom. If that happened, I might just watch a sitcom on NBC.

Oops, Kyle, sorry for the goof (Natalie Portman was also an understudy, though, too) but the point I was trying to make is that apparently at one time she could act because, knowing actors from 13 - 53 trying to make it in New York, unless it's an aging musical that has resorted to stuntcasting, you need to have some chops to get a gig - on or off- Broadway.

I loved Ned & Stacy. Too bad they didn't keep it around.

"Occassional Wife"? Already done, even using that name, sometime in the mid-1960's. It was horrid, and I recognized this, even though one of my favorites at the time was My Mother the Car.

Charisma Carpenter - that's another one who I just shake my head about in wonderment that she isn't on a major network. She can act, she's gorgeous - heck that pretty much applies to all the Scoobies. How come Allison Hannigan, David Boreanaz and Tony Head are the only ones with regular gigs?
