Despite a critical drubbing, Hayden Christensen's Jumper topped the weekend box office with a $27.2 million haul (and has collected $33.9 mil since its Thursday opening). Coming in second place was Step Up 2 the Streets ($19.7 mil; $26.3 mil since Thursday).

Rounding out the top five were Sarah Connor's Spiderwick Chronicles of Narnia ($19.1 mil), last week's champ, Fool's Gold ($13.1 mil), and Definitely, Maybe ($9.7 mil).

Overall, the top 12 movies were down 16 percent from the same weekend in 2007 (when Ghost Rider enjoyed the best President's Day weekend opening ever, $45.4 mil).

I don't get the joke! What does Sarah Connor have to do with the Spiderwick Chronicles??

EDIT: Oh, right, the word "chronicles" appears in the new Terminator show. I suppose my use of the word "joke" is a bit much, eh?

And the Chronicles of Narnia! Who knew that word got such a workout?

I was one of the people who saw Jumper this weekend, and I'm kind of suprised it was #1...it sort of felt like they accidentally made the rough draft version of the script.

And since the Academy Awards is less than a week away (wee!), here's an update for the Best Picture nominees:

Coming first among the BP nominees is Juno, which continues to steamroll the box office landscape with a weekened take of $4.6 million to add to its mammoth overall gross of $124 million.

There Will Be Blood, tied with another film for the most Oscar nominations, finally passed $30 million with a $3 million weekend. The other film with the most Oscar nominations, No Country For Old Men i.e. the frontrunner in ever sense of the word, took in $1.8 million to get over the $60 million hump.

Atonement continues its solid, but quiet run with a $1.4 million haul putting its total at $47.4 million just a few thousand dollars shy of the last Best Picture nominee, Michael Clayton's total of $47.5 million. It's weekend take is $930,000.

I've seen all the films, but I doubt most people have (just look at the grosses of the films not named Juno). How many have you seen? Are you rooting for any of the films? Me? I'm rooting for the gorgeous Atonement and the electrifying There Will Be Blood.

I don't understand how "Jumper" and "Step Up 2" were #1 & 2 at the box office this weekend. I saw the trailer for "Jumper" a few weeks ago and that looks like one of the worst movies ever. "Step Up 2" didn't look much better either. I thought "Spiderwick Chronicles" would be #1 for sure with all of the kids out there that were going to go see it and of course, since I saw it, I was hoping "Definetely, Maybe" would do better than what it did (although I didn't really expect it to do any better than about 3rd place).

I can't wait to see Jumper. I'm loving the trailers for it. Generally, I really couldn't care less what the critics think because they're usually snobby elitists. Rarely do I find an Oscar nominee that I love (Juno being the exception).

Dianora: "And the Chronicles of Narnia! Who knew that word got such a workout?"

No kidding! And it's one of those words that is never used in common conversation. Seriously, have you ever used it when not referring to a book or movie series? I think not.

My boyfriend and I saw Jumper this weekend and loved it! It was action-packed, had fantastic special effects, and it DID have a storyline to it. I watched a review of the movie after we'd seen it, and those snobby movie critics were analyzing it like they were expecting to see Shakespeare-written drivel. I go to the movies for entertainment--I don't want a movie with subtitles or hidden meanings! I loved Jumper and would see it 10 more times--it's a great movie!

Jumper took #1??? Thats just crazy!

I saw Definitely, Maybe twice this weekend and I absolutely loved it! I can't believe that both Step Up 2 and Fool's Gold topped it!

It just goes to show what a title will do for a movie...

I've been wanting to see Definitely, Maybe for a long time, and when my dad and I were looking for a movie to go see, I had no idea what it was just by looking at the title. I just knew it as "the Ryan Reynolds one where the daughter wants to know about his exes." We walked past the movie poster on the way to the theater Jumper was in, and I was like, "D'oh, I wanted to see that more than Jumper."

Maybe I wasn't the only one who went for something with a more descriptive title!

Just goes to show 'ya the critics don't know what they're talking about.

HEY CRITICS: it's a new era, newday, new time with free thinkers out there...we don't need you anymore. We'll decide for ourselves what we like and don't like.
