The CW's 90210 Spinoff: New Details

A detailed breakdown on The CW's planned 90210 spinoff has been released, detailing the show's protagonists and hinting at possible story lines. (The pilot is being written by Rob Thomas, who, of course, created Veronica Mars.)

The follow-up centers on the Mills family, who has recently moved from the Midwest to Beverly Hills. The plot's MacGuffin is that Harry Mills' mother, a 1970s movie star, has an alcohol problem and now needs constant supervision. Naturally, she will be everyone's favorite character.

Harry is an educational administrator of some sort; his wife, Celia, is a personal trainer/former Olympic cyclist. They met in the Peace Corps, and as such will be as sweet and forthright as Jim and Cindy Walsh. As in the original, there are two 16-year-old kids, but this time they aren't twins. Annie, a sensitive theater student, is the Mills' biological daughter; Dixon, a bright but troubled lad, was adopted at age 10.

Annie's new best friend is Silver (born Daphne Silver, but now she's rocking a uni-name), who seems like an amalgamation of early Kelly Taylor (when she was still Brenda's frenemy) and Tila Tequila. The self-promoting, YouTube-loving Silver lives with her twentysomething brother Max in a swank manse. Their folks are conspicuously absent, having been "on a cruise" for as long as anyone can remember. The breakdown insinuates that the parents might actually be dead... and that the kids might have been involved! Very Menendez-meets-Mars! While it's significant that this family shares a surname with the original series' David Silver, it's unclear at this point if there is any relation, or if the producers intend to bring back any characters from the original. (Just in case: Joe E. Tata, call your agent!)

A Middle Eastern character named Navid, producer of the school's closed-circuit TV newscast and Dixon's best friend, appears to be the new Andrea. Rounding out the cast are Ethan and Naomi, a tempestuous, on-again/off-again couple who form the other two points of a love triangle producers envision for Annie — and thus mirrors the early Kelly-Dylan-Brenda scenario and the later, less successful Brandon-Kelly-Dylan "I choose me" garbage.

Despite the absence of a Steve Sanders type (Long live KEG!) or a significant role for Tori Spelling's infant child, how does Nuevo 90210 sound to you? — Mickey O'Connor

Who in California DOESN'T have an alcohol problem?

Who needs a new 90210 when we've got Gossip Girl? Leave 90210 in the 90's where it belongs.

this sounds pretty awful, i don't think it will work, i think i'm just too old to relate to this anymore, hopefully it will be fun and light, not melodramatic

I don't get it...why is this a 90210 spinoff? Except for the similar character ideas and the silver name...it could have been any other teen show. Unless Andrea shows up as a teacher or something...it might as well be a completely new show. How original rich kids with problems!

I would rather have seen a show spun off of Veronca Mars dealing with rich kids in Neptune then this. I mean I love Rob Thomas as a writer, but I don't understand why he would want to be attached to this. You can do better Rob!

Spinoff? Don't think so.

The Jeffersons spun from All in the Family.

Laverne & Shirley from Happy Days.

Fraiser from Cheers.

I think Rob lost his copy of Television for Dummies. :^O

Soundsa bit...ho hum to be honest and to much trying to replicate 90210 rather than create a follow on

Hell, between Jesse and Andrea's kid, Steve and Janet's, as well as Kelly and David's sister there were enough links to the original to please the old fans and create new characters from them. Plus the timelines would work as well!

We'll see..

this doesn't sound like a spin off, this sounds like a duplicate. the family is even from the midwest. i think they could have been a little more original. i enjoyed 90210 in it's time, but i certainly won't be watching it this time around.

in a word - ridiculous. Oh, and unoriginal. And also repetitive. And, just for kicks, amazingly unentertaining!

Like everyone else said, this is not a spin off. A spin off must include at least one character from the original. West Beverly does not count as a character.

Well, 704 Hauser was a spin-off of All in the Family and it didn't have any crossover characters other than a cameo by Joey (!) in the first episode. So for it to be a spin-off for you, does the character have to be a regular?

I agree. The spinoff seems pretty boring but you never know I guess..maybe the cast will be good. Who knows. Too soon to tell

However I'm SO EXCITED for Gossip Girl to be back on Monday April 21st. Saw some pics of them shooting in NYC and I can't wait!

what kind of crap spinoff idea is that? i was excited when i first heard the idea but i was thinking more along the lines of having the same cast come back and they are just older now or they have kids or just a continuation of where we left off...not some lame wannabe remake of the original. in the meantime soap network is still there to feed me the old cast...

mackattack:

Not sure how to read that particular smiley. But in case you weren't just making fun of it's "blink and you'll miss it" television run, 704 Hauser was a spin-off that took place in the Bunker's house with a different family many years later.
