Exclusive: Battlestar Goes Back to the Beginning

Set 50 years before the first Cylon War in Battlestar Galactica, the two-hour TV-movie/series pilot Caprica (airing this fall) is more soap opera than space opera.

"Caprica is a sweeping, highly emotional relationship drama — a Rich Man, Poor Man set in a science-fiction environment," says exec producer and writer Remi Aubuchon (24), who created the prequel with BSG's Ronald D. Moore. "The look is nostalgic, almost 1950s, with the men in hats, ties and stylish suits. It's not about hardware and space battles."

Caprica stars Eric Stoltz as Daniel Graystone, a Bill Gates–like entrepreneur and inventor, and Esai Morales as immigrant lawyer Joseph Adama (the father of BSG's William), who hails from the other-side-of-the-tracks planet Tauron. "They're brought together by mutual grief when their daughters are killed in a terrorist bombing," Aubuchon says. But the bond turns sour when Graystone brings back their offspring as robots, creating the ancestors of the Cylons.

Also on board: Paula Malcolmson (Deadwood) as Graystone’s high-strung surgeon wife and Polly Walker (Rome) as a religious academy headmistress who secretly teaches monotheism — a crazy twist for BSG fans who've been led to believe the idea of one god originated with the Cylons. — Michael Logan

I'm assuming this doesn't have a premiere date yet. Should I also assume they plan on not releasing it until BSG finishes its final run in early 2009?

After the disaster that RDM turned BSG into with his meddling, shock-value storytelling and all-around nose-thumbing at his audience, I will NOT be watching any other show developed by him. Ever.

Actually, Caprica is set 50 years before the events of the series (the Second Cylon War). It is set 10 years before the First Cylon War.

"leavingslowly" YOU ARE A FOOL.

How could you not like BSG? You must have loved Star Trek Voyager when it was on the air.

I am intrigued by the information you have shared with us. I watch anything with Esai Morales! That plus the fact that it is a BSG pre-quel... oh yeah, baby, I'm definitely tuning in.

"Scorned1" - I have never watched any of the Star Trek tv shows or movies. Not my style, but thanks.

And I DID love the BSG miniseries, season 1 and most of season 2. RDM lost me with the time jump and I couldn't get back to it.

Soap Opera??? I guess the Sci Fi in me leaves a good space battle every now and then.

I will give it a try though...maybe i'm wrong.

While I am not happy with every episode and season of BSG, overall I like the show. And I am looking forward to the prequel.

I just hope it is not the train wreck that Bionic Woman turned out to be.

I have high hopes for this show. The cast is very talented, and the mythology is in place, so it should work just fine. After all, my BSG withdrawal will be painful once the series is over. A weekly dose of Caprica would be perfect!

I agree with chattypatra..I will also have withdrawals from not seeing BSG anymore. I LOVE THIS SHOW and will miss it. But Caprica sounds good and I love Esai Morales and I like Eric Stoltz also. So I am looking forward to seeing this show and hope it is good. The article above states the show will be airing this fall, before BSG ends.
