Barbara Walters: Paris Q&A Idea Was "Beneath Me"

In an interview with the New York Post, Barbara Walters says she turned down Paris Hilton's first post-pokey Q&A because — get this — the story wasn't "important" enough. "Look, I've done prison interviews before, but people like the Menendez brothers were really important news stories," she reasoned. "This wasn't. And even though I'd already written my questions, when all that pay-for-play stuff happened, I suddenly felt this was not up to my standard. It felt... sort of tawdry. The whole thing somehow was beneath me."

Natch, ABC had a cow and a half. "For them, it was ratings," Walters says. (Well, duh.) "For me, it was respect. I'm fortunately at a point in my life where I can choose what I want, and this was solely my decision" — which, she adds, ABC respected by not forcing her to gab with Hilton. Instead, execs just gathered in a dark corner, holding one another and weeping quietly.

Seems odd to me - she does celebrity interviews all the time. Maybe she is just saying this as a result of being criticized for sucking up to the Hiltons on the View.

Not usually a big fan of BW, put I'm glad she passed on this. It is tawdry...

If the Hiltons hadn't already agreed to NBC's $1 Million, I seriously doubt BW would be so haughty. She would snatch up the exclusive. She is a liar.

Whatever BW's motive is, I am glad PH is not on any major network except Larry King which I have stopped watching it long time ago!

Why does any care what what a rich whore has to say after getting out of prison.

There are other sluts out there who aren't criminals that can be interviewed: Such as J-Lo, Nicole Richie, Lindsay, Britney, Mandonna.

What about the male whores, lets hear from them.

I didn't know you could go much lower then hosting The View, because that's just loaded with real important stuff.

igboa, that's cold! How can you refer to J-Lo as a slut? And why?

I agree with Barbara though that she is above that. Paris is getting too much publicity for being a bad celebrity/non-celebrity who went to jail - why should BW devote a whole hour to talk with her, when she BW has interviewed Presidents, Prime Ministers, and other very important people. I do think it's beneath her.

Let me think about this...She is above the "tawdry" after-jail interview, but not above accepting a collect phone call from jail and discussing it on television the next day. Anyone else confused by the difference? Didn't she pay for an interview when she accepted that collect call. How many more times does Barbara have to be caught in a lie for her reputation to suffer? The Star Jones stuff, the Trump/Rosie Fued, now this. I can not believe that anyone still believes her.

Hey!
For the last time it's "The Few" not "The View".

Hmmm... "The whole thing somehow was beneath me."

Yet often times the stuff on The View is a bunch of cr_p! Think about it...wasn't it Walters who told everyone about the telephone call from the Hiltons? If it's so beneath her, don't even mention the phone call. BW continues to lose credibility.

Thank you, Ben. I laughed.

This is just TFF! Here was Barbara defending the Hiltons the entire time this ordeal was going on & saying what close family friends they all were. And yet, the Hiltons immediately stab her in the back when it comes to the almighty dollar. Maybe you need to reassess your friendships, Barbara.

Thank goodness Barbara didn't stoop any lower. Interviewing Paris, a no talent uneducated, brainless whimp. Famous for nothing. She should have had better judgement about "Rosie". She sure has made enough mistakes for this year. She can't afford anymore. She has already lost all her creditabilty, in my book. The way she lied for Rosie. And is still lying about rateing of the show, sure they had more rating, People tuned in for the fights, not the T.V. show. Saw how quickly Bob Barker backed down. Who wants a loud mouth, fat, lesbian, who thinks she knows more about everything than anyone. One time this year you acted smart Barbara. I still hope everyone boycotts your specials from now on, I know I will, along with my friends. "BIG MISTAKE BARBARA, BIG MISTAKE, THE ONE WITH ROSIE." GOOD CHOICE WITH PARIS, BUT NOT BENEATH YOU AT THIS POINT.

Has anyone considered that Ms. Walter's needs to see a doctor?

The decisions she's made over the last year or so sure seem like signs of senility to me...
