Aw, Heck, Just Some Random Thoughts

This whole Tyra Banks/"I'm not fat!" thing has to be one of the biggest non-stories to get such massive media play. Personally (and "until now," one of you will snark), I have steered clear of breathing a word about it, because it's merely a case of taking a tabloid story that otherwise would have come and gone, and milking it for a sweeps stunt.... Isn't it completely coincidental how Parade Magazine's "Personality Parade" column always seems to find real, actual readers inquiring about celebrities who happen to be currently promoting something? I mean, what are the odds?.... I love Diane Keaton, and Stephen Collins sure does give a swell interview, but is Because I Said So really the title of a feature film? Is It Could Happen to You ready to share its Worst Title Ever crown?

Romantic Comedy has got to be one of the worst titles ever. I mean why not just call it Generic Movie. Of course then it would have been a Fox comedy...

I have always wondered that. I think it is terribly transparent and stupid. In fact, have you ever noticed how they sometimes answer questions like "I am Suzy Whatsherfaces biggest fan, is she married?" And the answer is always that Suzy has been married to the same very famous actor for 15 years. Oh, and she happens to be starring in a movie this week.

How do people not know these things? I keep expecting a "I love Angelina Jolie, is she married, does she have kids?" question.

I say go Tyra. She looks great.

But Entertainment Tonight and Access Hollywood are the ones putting Tyra's tyrade on their shows. I don't blame Tyra for doing a show on it. More power to her.

Dawn, you complete me by echoing my thoughts on Parade. I don't live under a rock, I know that the women's service magazines and what not will often "make up" letters/"My Most Mortifying Date Ever!" stories to serve a purpose, but Parade barely makes an effort to fake it.

Actual example:

[Here's the pitch....]

Q. I see that Richard Pryor’s daughter, Rain, wrote a biography of the late comedian. Is it a "Daddy Dearest" book?
—Tricia Guthrie, Lambertville, N.J.

[... and the swing]

A. Jokes My Father Never Taught Me is a memoir, not a tell-all biography. "It’s a message about forgiving my dad for having flaws," says Rain, 37, a star of the ’80s sitcom Head of the Class. "He grew up in a brothel with no healthy family relationships. But all his kids made peace with him. I’m sure he’s smiling down at us now."

Even better....who in their right mind would write Walter Scott (who, btw, is he anyway?) about the Taliban...and what makes him the expert to answer that question?????

HA! I've wondered about the Parade questions myself for years. Glad I'm not the only one. It's really obnoxious. It does make you wonder if the people are real. But it doesn't look like they're going to be stopping this practice any time soon since it's been going on for so long.

Isn't Parade just a print version of Access Hollywood and Entertainment Tonight? I mean, really, if the star's publicists aren't paying to put their stories on those TV programs, then they need to shoot their news editor because the shows are so biased to certain people. Hearing about the Cruise baby five days a week for three weeks is too much -and that is just the promos, or seeing an ad for a story that is just plain misrepresentation of the facts - like Rosie blasting American Idol. I hate those shows and don't watch them! It's the reason that crap is always around, always being blabbed about. I'd rather have real entertainment news, like new projects or misconceived projects, people who walk away from something and why.

Actually Matt, when I saw the title
'Because I said so', and sae that it was about a mother and her kids, I was cracking up laughing. When I was a kid, I HATED when my mother would say that. But now, as a mother of a 10 year old who has to question and debate everything that is told her, I now realize WHY my mother used to say that!
Her biggest wish was that I would someday have a kid just like myself, and unfortunately for me, I did!! hahaha
I'm really looking forward to the movie... hope that it is good, and not just hyped up.

I agree with everything that has been said about Parade Magazine! I have always thought it was a bizarre little publication.

I mean, in what other magazine could you have Marilyn Vos Savant's "I'm so much smarter than you" question-and-answer column on one page and a catching-up-with-Jamie Farr feature on the next?

What is the average reader age of Parade anyway? 70?

As sapphiremoon also mentioned, here's the one that really caught my eye in the edition of Personality Parade that Matt linked to: With the Taliban making a comeback in Afghanistan, how much help can we expect from President Musharraf, our Pakistani ally?

What the hell...? I couldn't believe that Walter Scott's answer failed to mention that Pervez (his friends call him Pervez) has a new movie coming out in March -- The Real Cancun 2: Talibanned! -- and that he has been married to his wife Sehba since 1968.

Isn't this what Ausiello does in his column? ;)
