Avril's "Boyfriend" Trouble: "I've Done Nothing Wrong"

Addressing the controversy ignited by (as she puts it) "two guys who wrote for some band from the 1970s I have never in my life heard of," Avril Lavigne posted a statement on her website claiming no wrongdoing in her and cowriter Luke Gottwald's penning of "Girlfriend." Positing that the Rubinoos' "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" "has no musical similarities" to her current hit, Lavigne deems herself falsely accused. "Luke and I have done nothing wrong," she says. "There is no merit to their claim."

To make her case, Lavigne cites the Rolling Stones' "Get Off of My Cloud" and the Ramones' own "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" as also featuring similar themes. "[The Plaintiffs'] claim is based on five words! All songs share similar lyrics and emotions. As humans we speak one language." (Bob Dylan excluded.)

While I think Avril certainly has talent enough to not steal songs her song does sound a bit like that old song 'Hey Ricky'. Remember that old gem?

When I first heard Avril's song I thought it was a remake of another song. That to me says there was some "lifting", albeit maybe not purposefully.

We'll see what ASCAP has to say about that, Avril. Tsk, tsk, tsk. ;\

Eh, I don't listen to Avril at all and couldn't name one of her songs, so I could totally qualify to be an impartial and apathetic juror on this case.

I listened to both songs. I'm with her on this one. Pop songs are all about "hey" and "baby" and "ooh" and "yes" and blahblahblah.

Specious.

Once again Avril shows total disrespect to those who came before her; a few years ago, she mispronounced David Bowie's name and then just shrugged and said how should she know, he was famous before she was born. What a nitwit.

I can understand why not many people have ever heard of The Rubinoos, but come on! The songs sound exactly
the same -- at least the chorus does. I think Avril has improved the song, but it is way too similar to be some sort of "we speak the same human language" cosmic coincidence.
